You only need the middle 3 lights. Far as I know. Lights that are not needed can not be ticketed for. Such as chicken lights etc. Don't mean you won't get a level one though.

    Bean Jr. Thanks this.

Yeah, you need the top three on the rear of the trailer, at least.

Off to the chrome shop and install 15 blinding LED’s - rates are good right now, you can afford it. :)

Bean Jr. and Oldironfan Thank this.

    Define marker light. No, seriously...
If it's one of the required ones no, as it's well, required.
    If it's a non-required light it's fine to even leave as-is.

Here's the law with the highlighted portion that matters.
§393.9 Lamps operable, prohibition of obstructions of lamps and reflectors.
    (a) All lamps required by this subpart shall be capable of being operated at all times. This paragraph shall not be construed to require that any auxiliary or additional lamp be capable of operating at all times.

And here is the required lights.
eCFR — Code of Federal Regulations

Old DOT rule is, if it’s on there, it has to work, so if you take a hammer and bust it out, it’s no longer there, but it’s still a required clearance light, you might be able to put reflective tape there, or just change the light/get it changed.

New regs, or understanding the regs more accurately, if it is required, it must work, such as tail, brake turn signal and certain marker lights. If it is not required, it is not required to work, chicken, mirror, fog and excessive marker lights.

If it is required, knocking it off doesn't help and if it's not required, there's no need to knock it off.

    ZVar and not4hire Thank this.
