I’m new to the industry. I grew up on a farm in Mo. Drove grain trucks in fields and to the local MFA, also to ADM St. Louis & Cargill in Mound City. I spent 30+ years as an AWS Certified Welder and I’m done with construction. I start training at Clement in Lebanon, Mo on the 18th of this month for 4 weeks. Been talking to Fremont Contract Carriers and they said they will hire me out of training. I’ve got a super clean record and 2 speeding tickets from around 2000 and 1 in 2018. Any advice for an old guy just now getting into trucking? I appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Welcome aboard, you came to the right place. You will get 10 different answers from 10 different people. With your farm experience, it puts you head and shoulders above the rest, for me. Too bad the industry doesn't recognize that anymore. Trucking , like what you may be used to, is not a one size fits all. While I think truck driving is a great way for an older person to make money, please remember, there are situations where a younger person may do better. Many trucking jobs require at least some sort of manual labor, be it "fingerprint" a load, strapping down flatbed loads, tarping( that's a bitxx) and things like eating, sleeping, medical issues, all require special attention. Things we never thought about as younger folks. The biggest plus for an older person, is the pay. There aren't many jobs for older people that pay as well.
We have some of the most self proclaimed experts here, and can help in almost any trucking situation, but you have to ask. Things like preference, local, regional, OTR, reefer, van, hopper, dump, tank. It can be overwhelming. Good luck.huskerfan66 and Cherokee65 Thank this. -

I see they want one year experience, but maybe worth a phone call. There's a guy on here that runs for them and is pretty happy.
