Question to the seasoned ones

My first thought would be find another company to work for.

 

My first thought is get your affairs in order and none of these deductions would be an issue. You want to drive a cheaper older truck, spend some money and get it in shape where you're not getting unwelcome "surprises" and frequent inspections then finding out what you should have already known.

You want to "be your own boss and make the big bucks" then you have to assume a lot of personal and financial responsibility .., and don't be late. Lots of places improse late fees and that is going to come out of your pay, always. The eLog rules are established and should be no surprise as long as you make yourself aware.

 

Drivers are made to pay late fees. You are already late get going.

As far as the DOT etc, if the truck is maintained, your paper logs replacing the faulty computer with current last 9 days or so recap in place etc. You should be fine.

Whatever isnt working, have the shop make it working. And don't be late. Some companies used to FIRE people for being late especially if they happen to have a hot load on a very favored account that now threatens to find another trucking company that wont be late.

I hate to be difficult. People cannot get across town to be on time for doctors in 10 minutes. And here we professionals are seeking to be on time. If you are running late make a new appointment before you get there. Or have dispatch hand your load off to a team that will race it there. The moment you know you are running late, call them. BEFORE it gets to be a real problem. (And it will...)

If the hours tell you stop and stay, that is what you do. If the computers are busted, break out the paper logs and notate it so. And have the company get the computers fixed before more tickets come in for you to pay out of your wages.

There are two kinds of drivers. One who sit and cry about the woes of enforcement acts and financial losses easily avoided with some shop work and some commutation for new appointments and the other who simply keeps everything in order and is never late where possible legally. Guess which one gets to keep trucking.

Is this your truck, or a company truck? None the less, I agree with most of our members. Find another place to work for if they are treating you as an O/O, or read through the paperwork you signed in oreintation carefully to see if any stipulations apply to late fee's, mechanical failures being your responsibility. In most cases this should not be the case.

 

That's what I'm thinking. Probably doing one of those scam lease purchase deals through the company. That's what it seems from reading his post. Everyone thinks they can beat the system.

 

You should have a document in your permit book that clearly explains how to operate your e-log device. If the device is an older, legally grandfathered e-log device, you should also have something in your permit book explaining that.
