For reefer units, the threshold was 25 hp. In 2012, or maybe it was 2013, the manufacturers stopped offering an engine over 25 hp, so they could be in the lower tier, therefore avoiding the stricter regulations. Up until then, the bigger cooling units had around 35 hp engines.
Like good thinkers, maybe "they" are changing the rules again lol.
Reefers will have Def and DPF next year.

I've never understood why they don't go to a hybrid system.... Run a fourth line from the truck to reefer that can go both ways, the reefer unit could double as an apu/backup genset.

I've been hearing that def is causing a serious issue in CA with the growers. It's somehow killing the bees they use to pollinate the fields. I've heard there are numerous bee suppliers that are no longer moving their bees to CA because of the loss.

The study suggests NOx is one of the culprits. Here's a bulletin from the EPA on how to reduce NOx.https://www3.epa.gov/ttncatc1/dir1/fnoxdoc.pdf

Can you put an alternator on a truck big enough to run a reefer with electrical power? Would need a substantial power cable as well. Dropping the trailer would still require diesel engine or a power connection.
Might be worth thinking about if you can mount an alternator big enough.
