My brother who works for a major carrier, got loaded at Kraft in Illinois. 79,000 on ticket. No opportunity to check axle weights. He headed straight for the truckstop to get scale. Next exit port of entry. 3000 over on tandems. Officer issues a ticket with a set of fines surcharges and fees adding up to 770.00 Tells my brother he cannot move until it is paid. He called the company, Swift/Central Ref, spoke with a night dispatcher who told him to call Comcheck and code it as a lumper fee. He did so, and instead of a paycheck the following week he had a minus balance as they deducted the fine without any notice, he had no money at all for food. I understand that everything is driver responsibility, but I have never heard of having to pay a violation fine before you can move. He is in his 60s, just starting his second year driving, has an excellent driving and on time record despite spending his first several months on the road in record winter conditions in the east and midwest. He is extremely discouraged and ready to quit. He had electrical problems with his first truck which was down about a third of the time. The officer at the port of entry told my brother he was the second one that day from the same place over on axles. This seems very wrong to me, If a plant loads you, gives you paperwork, hustles you out of there, and the port of entry is between you and the truckstop right down the road, seems very suspicious to me. Thoughts?

Ohio's the same way, no pay-no move........Was it a reefer load?....The unit hanging on the front adds an addt'l 1500# right off the jump, full tanks even more....
Dominick253 Thanks this. -
I always thought that they don't give out tickets if there is no scale between the weight station and shipper
Dominick253 Thanks this. -
Did they have any SCALES where he loaded at ?
-
So you think Kraft is in cahoots with the IL DOT?.....seems likely.
An experienced driver could adjust the tandems and get it in the ballpark of being legal before scaling. Or if they have a gross weight scale, you can still use it to get your axle weights. Just takes the most basic understanding of 2nd grade arithmetic.misterG, Hammer166 and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
Illinois doesn't have port of entries... If he was loaded at Kraft in Champaign there is no weight station in that area...
The company is probably waiting for him to provide them with a copy of the ticket/receiptskibum_63, Longarm, Dominick253 and 2 others Thank this. -
Um it's call driving around the scale for a reason.
I had paper roll loads with a scale house 3 block away. I had to drive 30 minutes to go around it to a truck stop to scale. Rework 3 times but that's a different story...
Why would u drive right into the fire knowing...well there's a fire right in front of u. Trip plan to a scale to be legalsevenmph, Dominick253, scottlav46 and 1 other person Thank this. -
