I’d like to hear more about this part time dispatcher thing. Always looking for a part time gig with full time pay. Maybe 3 part time gigs making 3 full time pays. No money Mo money Mo money. Skies the limit.

Same here. Pretty simple. Why so many try to complicate things, is beyond me.xsetra, Siinman and Another Canadian driver Thank this.

Depends on the current market. Rates get set as a negotiation. Supply and demand dictates who has the power in the negotiation, resulting in an average rate. No one chooses to work for less, and no one wants to pay more than normal market price for anything. Sometimes it’s the only choice. Even Union negotiations reflect this, by taking pay cuts in bad times to ensure everyone’s survival. Sometimes it’s the only choice, other than find another Job. or a different business. Problem is many can’t figure out operating cost per mile.
One guy i know has 7 trucks, is a big farmer, so livelihood hood isn’t set on trucking.
Anyway, he told me his operating cost was .62/mile.
I told him he was crazy, pays drivers 28%.
he’s got some older trucks turned up, may get 5 mpg, so that’s $1/mile right there alone.
He thinks I’m crazy, told me he’d been doing it for 30 years, you can’t tell him anything about trucking.
He don’t drive, hasn’t for 15 years or so.D.Tibbitt, blairandgretchen, LoneRanger and 4 others Thank this. -
No one can control market forces.
The best you can do is identify your costs, maximize your revenue.
If it means outsourcing certain parts of your operation because your hired expertise can do the job better and hence minimize costs do it.
This whole business of parking the truck waiting for market forces to abate is folly.Siinman, F4T6UY and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
It's called the Free Market. Most of the OOs you're referring to in your post are a dying breed. They are being replaced with people from third world countries that will work for next to nothing.
Regardless of their business savvy or lack thereof they are becoming the majority in the industry. Most natural born citizens cannot successfully complete with them. An American OO pretty much has to find a niche in Transportation to be successful. Blaming the rates isn't going too fix anything.
As far as it being too easy to get in is because of the ease of getting an Authority. Before Deregulation the railroads and unions pretty much controlled it all. Now it's open to anyone that can get insured and pay the 300 dollars.Long FLD, PoleCrusher and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
That might be right after he gets all the government farm handouts, i mean subsidies...Dadetrucking305 and Rideandrepair Thank this.

Look at it this way.
Just because a bunch of people buy Kia’s doesn’t mean Lamborghini doesn’t constantly sell out year after year.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I don’t fail to see most of that, I just don’t care to break it down that far. Top it off with maybe 1k every two months and it 95% of the time keeps me profitable. Sure that may be “foolish” or “lazy” but if it works, year after year, I don’t care to reconsider.
trucking is just a stepping stone in my world, chapter is closing soon.
regardless I can run and make profit (although it may not be worth it) on garbage ratesLoneRanger and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
What you think is profit and what actually is profit are two totally different things, keep on running a business with you head in the clouds.D.Tibbitt, Midwest Trucker, Gsm and 1 other person Thank this.
