How many feet am I allowed to overhang off the back of 48' trailer and 53'? Is it up to 4 and then oversize permits are needed?

Depends on the state and how long your trailer is and how long the material is. A couple examples, WA doesn’t allow overhang on a 53’ without a permit, WY requires a permit for material over 60’.

What is the product length, trailer length and overall (front of truck to end of load) ?

    What states?

TX for example is legal with 57’ trailer/load. Also OK.

For permits. States are different. You're probably safe up to the 4 foot. Since that would put you at 52 feet. Less then a 53 foot trailer.

    The flags and banners themselves.
Anything over 4 feet. Lighting on the rear if driving in the dark. Wyoming requires lighting on the sides of overhang also. Least they made me light the sides.

Overhang as much as you can on the front. To minimize rear overhang.
Hopefully you have a 4x4 to lift the front up if needed. If you can keep the rear overhang under 4 feet. You shouldn't need flags and banners.

    That's for a 48 trailer.
