I already explained why. I went into great detail about it, but ok I'll do it again: no wife, no kids, no house, introvert that does well in self isolation, likes to travel (yes yes not the same as pleasure, I get that), does best when told to do a task and left to do it... and yes simple survival and supporting family are factors.

It seems you don't want to hear it but yes.... pay is a factor. Money is required for survival, like it or not. Money buys goods and services. I'm not expecting to get rich or make $100k right out of the gate. It's long hours of driving for less than the current minimum wage within my state. But it's not retail so that's already a plus in my book. I know #### well I would not survive retail.

I'd be satisfied with 50, happy with 60, overjoyed with 75+. For context, I currently live on about 15 and my mom lives on about 24, not mixing income or sharing living expenses at all because I don't live here full time. I contribute to the bills when I'm here if I'm not doing stuff on her car or house, because I'm not a freeloader.

I never said "i always wanted to be a truck driver" nor did I imply it. I simply indicated that it's probably the field I would have gone into at an early age, had things been different.

I have already explained it thoroughly, several times over in this thread, like everything you are asking. I'm just repeating myself constantly on everything, at this point.

As I said previously, I have been poking around online for a while, before I came here. And really? You're accusing me of watching "super truckers", even after I specifically said in a comment how I avoid that type of content because it's unrealistic?

That's exactly what I have been doing. But all you do is keep badgering me with the same questions, over and over and over, no matter how many times I properly answer you, while you're putting words in my mouth and assuming I mean things that I never said or implied (aka "reading between the lines, and then ignoring the lines")

It was called a ponzi scheme decades before and nothing changed. Have your panic attack but don't blame the country for your panic attack. You are self-medicating with pity and fear. You are in control of what you think even if the people that make money off yo NOT thinking for yourself want you to believe you have no ability to think for yourself unless the world is perfect.

This forum exists because of people like Ridgeline. Ridgeline didn't go to your forum and dictate any rules to you. You wandered into this forum where politics is meant for the politics forum. Follow the rules or you might not be here long. Maybe you are here because you have worn out your welcome at other places where you speak about politics primarily. TTR is not a place like that. Not every person is meant for every forum and not ever forum is meant for every person. Go get help on Reddit with maybe 10% as many truck drivers as this forum.

Yes, I understand it's stressful. but stress for any given job is relative to one's own brain chemistry.
Would I be able to handle the stress of retail? Most likely not.
    Would I for CDL/OTR? I don't know. Hey, I'm honest about it.

Colleges here are doing absolutely free fiber optic engineering courses, no grants needed. I looked into that field but it's definitely not for me. it's way too physically demanding, from what I have read. That's why I won't touch beverage or food service CDL. Maybe ok for 20 somethings, but not 40-somethings.

But see, there's a problem with your idea. If I start casual seasonal work, but not enough to survive on, that'll hurt me worse than going full throttle into a well paying career. I'll have to report all job earnings (no 'under the table' favors like RV repairs) to SSA because it'll be into the thousands and SSA will say "well if you can work part time, why aren't you working full time? we need to investigate!"

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. I just tried googling with your provided keywords, and others, but I cannot seem to find anything that discusses that very narrow specific topic. But I'll keep trying. Maybe I missed it.

YOU think your govt check is a life preserver. But it is always a handcuff. It has you rejecting work and money that gives you freedom for the "expired bologna sandwich and a cot" in the govt jail cell.

Even if the govt accepts periods of disability as substitute for work history, it doesn't require any non-govt employer also accept time on disability as a substitute for work history.

@Ridgeline is always very informative, blunt and honest.

And I'm surprised he has engaged you as much as he has thus far, @BenWolf

Ever see the Clint Eastwood movie Million Dollar Baby? The daughter becomes a famous boxer and buys her mother a house. The mother is worried that the house will affect her welfare checks.
"Even if the govt accepts periods of disability as substitute for work history,"
He has been on disability his whole adult life, over 25 years. I think that goes beyond a 'period of disability', more like a lifetime. Potential employers will ask why now, with or without a Class A CDL. Then what you gonna say Mr. Wolf? Afraid my benefits going to be cut off?? 25+ yrs says to me you have been too comfortable living the easy life while on disability and doing a small job here or there.
Maybe @BenWolf could try local driving such as dump truck for a year or two. Then if/when the market is better and he has some employment history try to go OTR.

Coming from a background with mental disabilities myself I got nothing at end my highschool. I couldn't serve in the military so that idea went out the door and unfortunately not the same education given to me as the rest of the people. They push you out those doors for next kid and don't care you can't do anything really SSI denied me though looking back SS pay would sucked to live off still given a poor education because they think its pointless to waste and better to use on someone else. The only thing positive I had relatives who drove my father, grandfather uncles they all drove and pretty much only thing saved me from being homeless. But what I have its really hard to hold a job and that's the biggest struggle to this day driving however isn't easy as some would say.

Unfortunately, you will not just be given a dispatch and “left to do it” you will have every available minute of every day allocated for you, before that day comes. E-logs, courtesy of Uncle Sam. And you will actually feel pressure to perform, which you have never had.

I'm not trying to beat up the OP, I am trying to tell him something he is missing out of all of this.

I want this guy to succeed, but without someone like me asking him questions that will be asked, I know what will happen, if he gets the job, he won't like being told when he can drive, crap, or eat, and he won't like the rules of the road - not the rules like living in a van traveling around but the rules that we all live by.
