What's the longest you've had to sit around waiting to load watermelons?

My worst was Cordelle, GA. Close to 42 hours. Dannys Melon Shed. Absolute incompetence. They order trucks long before they know they will have product ready.

Owner is an arrogant tub of lard that thinks he's high class. The old prune the works the office window acts like you're killing her firstborn when you get try find out what the hold up is and why you're still sitting there 36 hours later.

Instead of cancelling loads when it rains for days straight, they will pick watermelons in a monsoon so you will deal with rejected product at the receiver as well.

If an F5 tornado cross crossed his fields and doubled back a few times on the loading dock area it would be some poetic justice.

That would have been when I was with IWX and after 2 hours they would have pulled us out of there, cause the next problems is loading hot mellons, so you r refer is going to give you fits and if your going to Wally World there going to reject them cause there hot. Yea, been there done that, dry freight / No touch the only way to go.

I remember getting a decent amount... not sure who paid for it.

If they know product isn't going to be ready they shouldn't order trucks.

Those 42 hours could have been spent at home, or getting another load done and making more money...instead of at a staging area or a stinky Pilot.

Anybody remember flatbeds with plywood sides loaded to the brim with big watermelons, no tarps, no tailgate, just another sheet of weather-beaten plywood, being pulled by a tractor on its last legs, with 3 youngsters in the cab, headed for NYC from the Deep South. Was a common sight not that long ago. If the market wouldn’t accept the load, they’d set up on a street till the watermelons were all sold one by one for cash. Having 2 helpers on board was for lumping and retail sales. Lol

After a generous 5 hour wait time, just tell them you’re leaving, give them another 2 or 3 hours, while discussing with your boss, not some acne infected kid playing dispatcher. “Boss you paying my wait time, with a decent wage?” Same words to a broker, just leave unless that load got some miles and a rate above $4/mile! 42 hours is ridiculous, (unless you needed a reset), but no driver should accept that crap. Where I’m from 40 hours is a work week. That tub of lard you mentioned ain’t your boss, just a bad customer, who doesn’t deserve this level of service. Remember there are no victims in this situation, only volunteers!

At this point if I’m not being loaded in 3 hours I’m gone.

Tonu. Get it in the rate con.

Broker says fast load fast unload? Have him put it in writing. It’s all good when they promise the moon, now make them put their money where their mouth is. Any broker telling me max detention is x amount I walk away. They can keep me there for days for lousy $250
