For those who have doubts about Western Express’ shenanigans I keep this as a reminder of why I never went back to the company after I did my year and a half with them.
Note Western Express’ “1-800” number on the mud flap in the middle of the photo. Back around 2015 I had refused this loaded trailer because of the license plate issue (which given that company’s reputation was all too common).
Now their common answer to that is as along as the registration was with the trailer it was legal to use on the road. That may have been all fine and dandy in Tennessee but the trailer was located outside of COLUMBUS,OHIO(right outside of the “lions den” of the Ohio Highway Patrol) and the load was heading to VIRGINIA.
Do you think I’m going to jeopardize my LICENSE (and my LIVELIHOOD) because a company didn’t check to make sure its equipment is order? I don’t think so!!!D.Tibbitt, FlaSwampRat and MGE Dawn Thank this. -
I agree you should go flatbed . Job hopping isn't a thing in trucking . In the corporate world it is but not trucking . Walmart and the ltl teamsters don't like it but that's it. Everywhere else is used to it either because they are crooks themselves or because they have drivers come there in hopes of a good job .

Job hopping is a thing in OTR trucking. Some companies frown on that. It costs a lot of money to hire people. OTR trucking is OTR no matter who you work for. It's all the same. People move around a lot thinking there wont be any BS, when in reality its just a different degree of BS. To work in this industry, you have to have a high tolerance for BS. It's too many variables that drivers can't control. It dont matter whether its OTR, local, owner operator, oil field, all these branches of trucking have had drivers come on TTR and fuss and complain. It's too many people trying to have big balls and saying that "I wont be pushed around" yet they go to another company to get pushed around. A driver really isn't making a statement by quitting. These companies dont care about a driver's feelings. It's a business. You quit, they just move on as if you were never hired in the first place. OP, my advice to you would be to do some diligence and soul searching in your job search. You have to figure out what's important to you in a company. For instance, if I talk to a recruiter, I dont want to hear about incentives. I only want to talk freight, how many miles, cpm. That affects my day to day living. Home time and everything else will take care of itself. You're pretty inexperienced, so you will have to try hard to do some time at a company. From time to time you'll have to eat ####. That's with any job. Once you find your trucking identity, then it's easier to find a company that works for you

I want to know how companies like #### roach England, Stevens transport, and obviously welfare express set up their business to keep a revolving door of drivers? Does it really hurt them or do they gain from that ?

Well, I took a warehouse job loading and unloading trailers (best believe I'll be one of the fast ones, especially after having experienced the ######## that goes on for myself) in the short term so that I could take my time deciding where I wanted to go next, without the pressure of not having any money to eat or keep the lights on (which is, in part, what helped drive me to make the mistake of landing at Western in the first place), and I'm perfectly comfortable doing that for a couple years to let some #### from my early Swift days fall off my record, and then applying to some new companies at the end of the window where my experience would be considered "recent."
System is one of the companies I'm considering. So is Melton. There are a couple local flatbed outfits I've been in talks with, and without telling them that this is what I intended to do, they also suggested it.
So, job hopper I may be, but see if I give a flying ####. I drew my line in the sand that I would not cross, I drew it at violating the law, and I put up with their ######## without complaint until they tried to force me to cross my line. I refused, they went to fire me, and I made a strategic decision to quit in order to make my job hunt easier... which worked, I might add, as I had a contingent offer for my new job before the Greyhound ride home was even over. I finished my I-9 and W-4 with my new employer yesterday, and completed my drug test at the same time, with my start date set to this coming Sunday. I won't be making what I made at Swift, and especially not what I would make at a PROPER company. But I will be making more than I did at Western, which really says quite a bit, I do believe.
At the end of the day, I've learned quite a bit about making it in this industry. At Swift, I learned how to put up with ######## stacked a mile high. At Western, I learned how to recognize the ways a company will try to force me to cross the line I've drawn in the sand. At least as a lumper you'll be used to work if you go flatbed . Western and swift both have a reputation for being scumy people know it

Ain't no shame in working the dock. I usually end up doing it one day a week. Today is that day for me.
