Memorial Day weekend is upon us again and the National Safety Council is reminding all motorists that the weekend will see a huge increase in traffic – and accidents to go along with it. According to the NSC, it is estimated that 383 people will lose their lives over the coming weekend alone.
That shocking statistic counts from 6pm on Friday until midnight on Monday night, but traffic across the country will start to increase well before then. It also doesn’t end with the fatalities. An additional 46,300 injuries are expected for the weekend as well.
“Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer fun for families around the country, but unfortunately, the long holiday weekend will end with death and injury for far too many,” said NSC President and CEO Deborah Hersman. “These tragedies are completely preventable. We issue these estimates to make drivers aware of the risks on the roadways and encourage them to be especially cautious this weekend.”
While the majority of these accidents will not involve large trucks, and the majority of accidents involving large trucks are not the fault of the trucker, it’s important to remember how uneducated the motoring public is about how to drive safely around big rigs. So stay safe out there, keep your head on a swivel and the shiny side up.
