Local authorities are still trying to figure out what caused a murder at a truck stop in Maple Grove, Minnesota that led to police chasing a suspect at high speeds down I-694 before he crashed his vehicle into the median, exited the vehicle with a weapon and was shot and killed by officers on the scene.
Police responded to a call at the Elm Creek rest stop on I-94 at around 1:00am on Wednesday. According to Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek, when police arrived they found a man who had been shot to death. After interviewing witnesses and getting a description of the suspect’s vehicle, police spotted a vehicle matching the description driving on I-694.
When they attempted to pull the vehicle over, he sped off, leading police on a chase that reached up to 115 miles per hour. The suspect drove for 18 miles before he crashed his SUV into cable barriers in the median.
Upon exiting the vehicle, the suspect was surrounded by officers from multiple jurisdictions. According to the sheriff’s office, he brandished a weapon at the officers and was shot. Authorities didn’t say what sort of weapon it was. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Though authorities have not officially released the identity of the suspect, it has been reported that he was high school student Johnathan Mar, a student at Legacy High School/Tri-Tech Skills Center in Kennewick, WA. The school district has confirmed that one of their students was killed by police in Minnesota.

Let me get this straight – the headline says rest area, then the first line of the story reads truck stop. Still later it says rest stop. Does anybody in Minnesota know where it actually happened?
