As truckers get more experienced on the road, they pick up all sorts of skills that aren’t part of a new driver’s training regimen. Veteran truckers who have been on the road for long enough are able to handle just about anything that might get thrown at them… even, as it turns out, delivering babies.
Two truck drivers starting their days off with a breakfast at Denny’s ended up delivering more than freight when a pregnant woman burst through the doors and went into labor. Fred Robatcek and Peter Holland both rushed to the woman’s aid and ended up helping her deliver a 10 pound baby boy right there on the floor.
The woman had been on her way to a hospital, but stopped to pick up her mother who was working at the Denny’s in Texarkana, Arkansas. Before they could get back on the road however, the woman went in to labor.
Robatcek and Holland rushed to her side to discover that the baby was already on its way out. They helped her onto the carpeted floor and called 911. As the baby started to emerge, they realized that the umbilical cord was wrapped around its neck. Holland, thinking quickly, pushed the baby back inside and untangled the umbilical cord.
By the time the ambulance arrived, the baby had already been born and the drivers had given the mother water and towels and started to clean off the newborn.
“I’m so humbled by this experience,” Said Robatcek. “And so grateful that God chose me to help bring a new life into this world. It happened so fast… there was no possible way an ambulance could have gotten there in time.”
Both Robetcek and Holland were presented with the Truckload Carriers Association Highway Angel pins and certificates for their actions.
“It wasn’t until I got back in my truck and was headed toward Mexico that I realized… I just helped someone through a very difficult situation and delivered a healthy baby boy—and all before breakfast,” said Robatcek.
