We’re less than a month removed from Roadcheck 2018. Already though, truckers are seeing Operation Safe Driver Week lurking on the horizon.
Operation Safe Driver Week is a week-long enforcement blitz focused on CMVs and four-wheelers alike. It’s run by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance in conjunction with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
According to their website, the CVSA created the Operation Safe Driver Program “to help to reduce the number of crashes, deaths and injuries involving large trucks, buses and passenger vehicles due to unsafe driving behaviors.”
Enforcement officers will be on the lookout for “dangerous driver behaviors” including “speeding, distracted driving, texting, failure to use a seatbelt while operating a CMV or in a passenger vehicle, following too closely, improper lane change, failure to obey traffic control devices,” and more.
Operation Safe Driver Week will take place July 15-21, 2018.

MORE LAWS!
It’s not about the “safety” anymore it’s about citations and quotas and how much can you leech out of drivers & companies and legitimate harassment
Time to keep my CB on channel 9 and start pointing out people texting while driving…
… If only that worked.
I’ve been driving only 24 years I have never heard an officer or a DOT officer on Channel 9 and I have called out to them and one case we were on side of the road I don’t remember where I think it was Southern Virginia 18 wheeler the guy had a stuck brake the damn tire was fully engulfed we were trying to put out the fire and. Cop drove right on by never even stopped
Quotas and revenue. Extortion on the highways. They’ll make something up if they choose too , its just dot trying to secure their bonuses and Christmas party in December.
So a week to enforce existing laws, as if the rest of the year they are ignored. Safety? It would be interesting to see the revenue generated for citations in the name of “safety”. A week long focus on safety. What’s going on the rest of the year with enforcement-donut breaks? Any chance of enforcing the laws for all drivers? Soccer moms, teenagers, old guys, etc.? If safety were the issue, it would be projected in a positive way, rather than to see how many commercial drivers can be hammered in a week. I totally agree there are too many idiot truck drivers, and they should be removed from the road. What about a year long safety blitz that actually focused on safety, and not used as a training forum for the new Barney Fifes?
Another revenue blitz.
10-4!!!!
Exactly.
If it was about safety, there would be common sense enforcement daily.
Blitzes are quotas police hunting for minor issues while the dangerous vacation for 2 days.
So in other words. They are just asking law enforcement to actually do their jobs?
This is what the law is suppose to be doing every day ….what a joke
Yeah man I see these signs up here in the northeast that say DUI Enforcement Area….. and I’m thinking Dude!– they’re supposed to enforce DUI laws EVERYWHERE!! what a joke.
it’s a trick ya see.. They have a sign running the dui enforcement ahead message then scoop up the drivers who get off the interstate hoping to avoid a DUI. NC did that for years.
Exactly!!!
Amen.
Isn’t this what they’re supposed to be doing every day anyway ??
Amen.
What a freaking joke. Can you say revenue rover. If they have to do these blitz’s too enforce everything. What are they doing the rest of the time?
This means there is a federal grant that agencies apply for to pay for overtime during this extra enforcement. The Officers that are off duty can come in and make some time and a half pay.
Everyone knows that truckers are rich…right???
Just one more person, office, agency reaching into your pocket.
IF THEY WOULD ONLY LOOK AT THE FOUR WHEELERS AND SEE HOW THEY SCREW UP ON THE ROAD A LOT OF THIS STUFF WOULDNT BE NECESSARY. ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. THE RICH KEEP TAKING FROM THE POOR, THE GOVERNMENT!
They are supposed to be doing this anyway and anyone driving a big rig , should not be texting. If caught they should have their licensed taken from them and never allowed to drive a truck again. I drover almost 25 yrs .
Operation We Didn’t Get Enough Money During The Last Blitz So We Came Up With Another One 2018
I only saw one scale in Virginia doing anything during the last blitzkrieg.
What about regular daily enforcement of poor driving?
Blitzes punishing law abiding citizens for the smallest things while the dangerous are vacationing for 2 days…
Basically the same as giving a courtesy call to a felon before their arrest??? They will be waiting…
These safety blitz are just a feel good policy for government agencies to put on the news so the sheeple think it’s about safety. If all agencies would enforce laws consistently, then they would have safer highways.
Going east on I-70 today just out of Columbus,oh. In the short stretch from Columbus to I-77 , I didn’t actually count the 4 – wheelers that was texting. But it seemed as 4 out of 10. One pickup was using his lane and part of the other as he came by and on out of sight , It’s a sure way to cause an accident! Those type of fools frighten the crap out of me,because I’m clueless as to what their next move may be!!! You know as well as I, law enforcement sees that going on . Or do they??
Up here in Canada we are starting a Canada Day long weekend. Everyone and their grandmother were driving out of the Greater Toronto Area last night. I was driving my rig. Fourwheelers texting, cutting trucks and other 4wheelers off, erratic driving, too slow, too fast, not able to keep in lane, changing 3 lanes at a time, driving with no rear lights ( that’s actually an epidemic up here)…etc, etc. Not an effing cop in sight for the 350 miles I drove. I wish they stopped announcing and doing the feel good, politically expediant safety blitzes and started doing their effing jobs every day. Maybe the roads would then be safer.
What about all the cops I see Texting?
I actually asked a trooper that question in Knoxville T.N at the scale as they were finishing up the paper work on my level 3 inspection and was told that they were professional drivers with training on skid schools etc . I said well I’m a professional driver as well as with training on skid pads as well and with over 32 years of driving over the road in cars trucks and buses I have more miles backing up then he has in his whole life of driving he started to get mad and was stammering the other officer handed me all my paperwork and said I better get out of there at once
It’s all BS. This is all about votes, they will have crappy stories like this to be released just so voters will believe they are getting the transportation industry safer. People really don’t care because if they did then they would drive better. However POLITICIANS see this as political gain for votes. Also it’s a great way for them to use some of the money given by the FDOT.
Lets all go on vacation that week. Just saying.
Its never about safety. Like Liberty, Equality & Fraternity, Safety is a word for tyranny or control.
This upcoming onslaught is about profits and nothing more.
I don’t need the government to help keep me Safe Mainly because I can protect my own wallet
As a safety dept employee, we’ve seen too many drivers speed to make it back to the yard before their clock runs out. These fools in congress made the roads more dangerous. Not to mention the company runs the drivers like robots now…if they are tired they are pushed to drive and when they are awake and feeling good, the 8 hour break stops them.
The ATA and FMCSA should be sued. They have no clue what they are doing.
