Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has issued two recalls affecting a total of over 400,000 Freightliner and Western Star Trucks.
The larger recall was a safety defect concerning brake lights. According to DTNA, after several hard brake applications, the brake lights might not activate properly in some situations. In their self-submitted defect report, DTNA writes that in “November 2017, with an abundance of caution, DTNA decided to initiate a voluntary recall campaign.
The problem affects up to 436,095 model year 2008-2018 Freightliner Cascadia and Western Star 4700, 4900, 5700, and 6900 models.
An additional approximately 3,000 trucks are being recalled over faulty brake calipers. The mounting bolts may not have been properly tightened, which could cause the calipers to detach and result in “reduced braking performance.”
This issue could affect 2018 Freightliner 108SD, 114SD, Cascadia, M2 Business Class, Custom Chassis S2C 106, and S2G vehicles. Additionally, 2018 Western Star 4700, 4900 and 5700 trucks may be affected.
Notifications will be mailed in late January to the owners of affected trucks.
