Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has issued a recall on some of their Freightliner Cascadia tractors. The recall follows reports that the driver’s side air bags may deploy unexpectedly when they aren’t supposed to.
DTNA’s voluntary recall will bring in 2,894 2017-2019 Freightliner Cascadia trucks. According to the defect information report, “under certain circumstances, an unintended deployment of the steering wheel air bag may occur.”
The cause of the malfunction is still under investigation, but DTNA says that “it is possible” that an electrical issue could be damaging the steering wheel clockspring, causing the air bag to deploy.
DTNA’s report submitted to the DOT says that they are aware of this happening in only two instances. Neither resulted in an accident, but DTNA admits that the issue “may cause risk of injury to the driver and might increase the risk of a potential crash.”
Owners of trucks effected by the recall will be notified by Daimler and modifications will be made free of charge. The recall will begin on January 9th, 2019.
If you have any questions about the recall, you can contract DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA’s number for this recall is FL800.

My 2018 Cascadia has no airbag. This must be an “extra feature”.

My 2019 does . It is an option. And mine has been in the shop for three weeks now because drivers side airbag malfunction light is on . Freightliner says there are no codes and there is nothing wrong . Typical Freightliner response. I refuse to drive it.

DTNA please, not DNTA.
