A truck driver is being hailed as a hero after he managed to rescue two children from a burning house in Sioux City, Iowa.
Driver Martin Hughes was driving through Sioux City on Thursday night when he saw a woman on the side of the road tying to flag him down.
“I saw a lady waving her arms, trying to get my attention,” said Hughes in an interview with Siouxland News. “And then a kid holding a baby. And they were just frantic.”
The woman’s pointed to her house, told him it was on fire, and told him that two of her kids were still trapped inside.
Hughes first went in through the front door.
“I tried to crawl down on the ground and get under the smoke, but it was terrible bad – I couldn’t get anywhere in there,” Hughes said. “So, we started running around the side of the house and I was like ‘which window is the kids’? Which window is the kids?’ and she didn’t know so we just started busting windows.”
They were finally able to find the children and Hughes pulled them out.
Both children were unharmed. When emergency crews arrived, Hughes was treated for a laceration on his hand that he suffered while breaking the windows.
Hughes told reporters that he was just glad that he was there to help.
“Totally just the right place at the right time,” he said.
