Iowa’s governor has suspended hours of service regulations for drivers making much-needed propane deliveries, reported etrucker.com.
Wet field conditions in the state resulted in overly-moist crops this fall, and the deliveries are needed to help dry the crops. Gov. Chet Culver made the critical exception Nov. 9, adding to the Oct. 1 weight limit suspension for truckers hauling soybeans and corn. Without the special measures, grain elevators were under threat of overload from the crops.
While the weight exception is generally granted annually for harvest-related reasons, the HOS lift is a less frequent occurrence, said Culver’s press secretary, Troy Price. A fuel shortage during severe weather in 2007 prompted the last lifting of the hours rules.
Both special measures expire Dec. 1.
