Truckinginfo reported earlier today that Navistar may not be able to produce 15-liter trucks in 2010. While it was already known that Navistar’s 2010 emissions compliant MaxxForce 15 wouldn’t be ready until 2011, it was previously believed they would sell 15-liter 2010 model trucks equipped with 2009 15-liter Cummins engines that were purchased before the new emissions standards take effect. However, a provision in an Aug. 28 EPA proposal may make such stockpiling of engines an illegal circumvention of the Clean Air Act, preventing Navistar from using the 2009 Cummins engines.
Navistar’s MaxxForce line is ready to go with 11- and 13-liter engines, but 15-liter diesels make up around 60 percent of Navistar’s heavy duty truck sales. While 2009 has been a dismal year for commercial vehicle manufacturers, Navistar’s 2010 is going to be even worse if they don’t have a 15-liter option.
