Imagine a daring highway rescue where a tough-as-nails cop risks his life by leaping onto a moving tractor trailer to save the unconscious trucker inside. It may sound like a scene from a summer blockbuster, but that’s exactly what happened when a police officer received a call about a truck driving erratically and a Sheriff’s deputy responded heroically.
Deputy Todd Volk was one of the law enforcement officers to respond to the call and caught up to the truck on 81 West in Nebraska, finding that the driver wasn’t responding to sirens or lights. One of the other officers pulled up next to the truck and reported seeing that the driver had just “the blank stare on his face” and he knew that “something wasn’t right” according to Volk.
The driver was apparently still able to keep his truck on the road, but he was approaching a city and a large intersection, so Volk knew that something had to be done.
“As he came by, I could see the driver’s head slumped down and felt he was not conscious and it popped in my head that we need to get this vehicle stopped,” said Volk. “At that point in time, the truck was traveling about 20 mph, I jumped back in my patrol vehicle, punched it and got up in front and jumped out and jumped up and grabbed the hand railing and the mirror on the side of the truck and hit the brakes.”
Volk reported that the driver had been unconscious due to a diabetic episode he was suffering due to low blood sugar.

Very brave cop! Kudos to him
Good job officer. A job well done.
Kinda shows that despite all the Negative comments often made about the Law Enforcers there are some willing to risk Life and Limb to help someone in Distress……Thumbs up to that Officer…
Kudos to the guy! Great Job!
But be honest, the cop was just auditioning for
the latest Stunt Man Position in the next Bond Movie!Lol!
Seriously though, hats off to the guy!Great Job!:)
These are the stories that should be dominating the news. Props to the cops!
Another good police officer story! There are thousands of them, but we usually only hear the bad ones. That was a brave and dangerous thing to do. 20 MPH doesn’t sound fast but one slip and he’s under the wheels. Hats off to deputy Volk!
It’s great to read stories like this, but I don’t understand. Did he jump from the driver’s seat? That’s what it sounded like he did when you read his account.
A little confusing first read: he “…got up in front…” (of the runaway truck driving his vehicle) and then “…jumped out…” (of his vehicle) “…and jumped up…” onto the runaway truck from the ground i.e.; he leaped onto a moving vehicle from a dead stand still on the road – BRAVE MAN, deserves a bonus and a raise.
Yes, he jumps from the driver seat of his car across the passenger seat and onto the semi truck. He saves the semi truck and driver leaving his unattended vehicle rolling down the road towards the intersection and city mentioned in the article.
Use some common sense and read the article.
He jumped back in his car punched it and got in front of the truck, stopped his car and got out and jumped onto the semi truck.
I have observed in Nebraska, usually the Sheriff’s Department has two officers in their pick-up trucks.
That Officer deserves the recognition that he is receiving, and then some. You have earned 5 Ata Boys. Keep up the good work. Maybe one day the favor will be returned, lets pray that it is not necessary.
Thank you trooper
That’s pretty cool!
Was the driver not diabetic at his last DOT physical?
The story isabout police officers risk their lives every for the public safety, who cares about DOT exam.
If you are driving interstate, you are allowed to drive with diabetes if your doc says you have it under control.
I hope the driver is doing well. Low blood sugar can do as much damage as high sugar. I think he might be newly diagnosed as I’ve never met a type one that didn’t have a Costco-sized box of candy bars under his seat for just these times…
If the driver is a type one diabetic he/she cannot drive a commercial vehicle, because the driver would have to use a needle for insulin, type two can drive but dot physical is only good for a yr at a time, sometimes even less time depending on the severity of his/her health issues,Thankyou officer for your heroic moves, you could have been killed,i’m sure you have a guarding Angel as your co-pilot.
Great officer..no doubt..Unlike a few out there who would shun this and have let the guy crash..This is a real officer..The kind you admire and feel that camaraderie that makes you want to look over their shoulders and watch their backs and be there when they need YOU…
