A proposed fee adjustment could spike the cost to register trucks under the Unified Carrier Registration Plan by 122 percent.
The UCR planning board will hold a teleconference to work on the plan on Dec. 10. Those who want to participate will need a pass code and toll-free number to join in, which can be obtained by calling Avelino Gutierrez at (505) 827-4565.
The board originally proposed a new fee adjustment in April, with the intent that the new plan would take effect January of 2010. The comment period was extended by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in September.
Both the American Trucking Associations (ATA) and the Transportation Carriers Association (TCA) have opposed the plan, primarily due to the huge jump in per-vehicle fees. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has supported the fee hike, and has pushed to bring the ruling to “timely issuance”, according to the article. The international not-for-profit organization said the increased fees would still cost truck owners less than the old Single State Registry plan.
