The 14th of October marked the end of the most recent cross border pilot program between the United States and Mexico which sought to determine whether or not Mexican carriers would be able to safely operate on United States roads. But just because the program is over, doesn’t mean those Mexican carriers will be leaving.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is waiting on reports from the Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee and the Department of Transportation Inspector General before it makes its next move concerning the program, so for now no new carriers will be signed up. But those 13 carriers that were in the program before it ended will continue to operate.
According to a statement issued by the FMCSA, the agency has “converted the 13 participants to provisional or standard operating authority, allowing those carriers to continue to operate in the United States.”

I’m curious what the final verdict will be. I’ve heard a lot about Mexican drivers.
This is bad all the way around. We have the majority of the large transportation Company’s already getting away with paying less then it’s possible to live on, and now we have to compete with company’s that will take not only the drivers money back to another country but all there profits too. Is there just nobody who cares what happens to this country any more? We can’t employ millions of our own people here so let’s bring up cheap people to do it for less.
If you have been following the news the last few years you will notice almost all the big companies have invested in mexican companies so they could slide in the back door that way.
Personally I think that CDL holders should only be naturalized US or Canadian citizens who have lived here (or Canada) since they were around 13 years old so they could get a sense of community and attitudes. Look at the number of major accidents involving immigrants . I hate to lump people together as I have known some very sharp immigrants driving here but it you leave a trucking company a loophole they will use it to exploit drivers.
Where is your complaints about the Canadians who do the same thing. Canadian drivers take their money back to Canada and profits to the Canadians carriers are returned to Canada.
This has been a one way road since implementation of NAFTA. Mexican drivers can operate here, but we cannot (safely) operate there. There is fear of being robbed or killed for us in Mexico. Not to mention the highway system there is abhorrent. As usual the only people that will benefit from this program are ANYONE that isn’t American! This country is in a B-29 with 3 engines on fire on a nose dive at 2,000 feet. No one will even send an emergency response crew after the impact!
Apparently Cary, you’ve never seen a Mexican highway, much less driven one. Mexico’s highways system is no worse, and in some cases better than ours.
