The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is actively seeking input from truck drivers, transportation businesses, and trade organizations as part of a new initiative aimed at identifying and reducing unnecessary transportation regulations. This move follows recent executive orders issued by President Donald Trump that focus on streamlining government regulations and lowering compliance costs for businesses.
One of the most significant directives is the January 31 “10-for-1” executive order, which requires federal agencies to propose repealing at least 10 existing regulations for every new one introduced. This surpasses the earlier “2-for-1” regulation policy from Trump’s previous administration and underscores the administration’s commitment to reducing bureaucratic hurdles.
Goals of the Deregulatory Effort
The DOT’s effort aligns with Executive Orders 14219 and 14192, which emphasize government efficiency and economic prosperity through deregulation. According to the agency, the purpose of this initiative is to ensure that DOT’s regulatory activities remain lawful, prudent, cost-effective, and aligned with national interests. The DOT aims to ease the financial burden on small businesses and improve operational efficiency across the transportation sector while maintaining safety and compliance.
The agency is especially interested in hearing from individuals and organizations about:
- Regulations or guidance that are outdated, ineffective, or redundant
- Reporting requirements that are unnecessarily burdensome or costly
- Paperwork obligations that could be modernized using current technology
- Rules that obstruct or delay transportation infrastructure development
- Collection of data or information that the agency does not use effectively
This call for public input is not limited to one-time submissions. In addition to formal comments due by May 5, the DOT has established a dedicated email inbox—Transportation.RegulatoryInfo@dot.gov—to accept ongoing suggestions. All feedback will be compiled and posted on regulations.gov under the DOT’s Request for Information docket.
Opportunities for the Trucking Industry
For the trucking sector, this initiative presents a unique opportunity to influence future transportation regulations. Drivers, carriers, and logistics providers often face complex compliance requirements and costly reporting obligations. DOT’s willingness to engage with stakeholders directly may result in the repeal or reform of outdated or burdensome rules that affect operations and profitability.
Industry associations, small businesses, and independent operators are encouraged to review current DOT regulations and provide detailed feedback. By participating in this process, stakeholders can help shape a regulatory environment that supports innovation, reduces costs, and sustains safety across America’s transportation infrastructure.
