Dale Crawford, part of the Crawford trucking legacy that spans four generations, former owner of Dale F. Crawford & Son trucking, and beloved trucking icon has died. Dale passed away at a nursing home on Dec. 21st after a lengthy illness at the age of 68.
The industry has changed over the years. Driver turnover is again over 100%, and young drivers who stick around for only a few years are becoming more and more common. There are still those who remember how things used to be, and there are still those who take pride in keeping that way of life alive. In the world of trucking families, the Crawfords of the Lincoln Lakes Region are as solid as you get.
As a show of support, a 37-truck convoy led by Dale’s son, Percy made its way from his old company to the Wytopitlock Baptist Church carrying his remains. The precession had close to 300 people in it and was a fitting tribute for a man who was a mentor and colleague to so many in his life.
“It was very touching. They provided a special memory that I will carry in my heart for the rest of my life,” said Dale’s daughter, Julie Crawford Howland.
Howland said that her father was a popular man, particularly for his favorite saying.
“Dad was well-known for the quote: ‘When it is too tough for everyone else, it’s just right for the Big C,’” she said. “He meant that you never quit and you never give up.”
If Dale Crawford leaves behind one thing, it will be that drive and determination. As backwards as it can be sometimes, the industry has been both home and family to many of us. As it continues to go through changes, it’s important to remember men like Dale and the power that the old way of doing things can have.
