As soon as the clock struck midnight and the new year began, an unknown number of ELDs became largely useless. Drivers using the effected ELDs needed to move back to using paper logs. The problem appears to have been an issue with the time/date settings. It seems that the devices didn’t understand that 2020 was a real year.
On January 1st, large numbers of PeopleNet Electronic Logging Device users reported issues with their devices. Some users reported that the device would get stuck in a rebooting cycle when it was turned on, preventing users from even making it to a login screen.
According to Freightwaves, the clock on the device and the clock on the data server were not syncing properly. This is because the devices were reportedly manufactured with only the years 2007-2019 as options for the current date. So, when the clocks struck midnight and 2019 ended, according to the ELD software, it was now 2007 again.
According to Trimble, the company that owns PeopleNet, a patch was made available by the evening of January 1st. But enough users are still having problems that Trimble has now requested an extension from the FMCSA to the amount of time drivers can use paper logs instead of ELDs in the event of a malfunction.
In related news, Trimble just recently announced that it has acquired transportation management system provider Kuebix.

Y2K updated. (anyone can learn to code) right!
My code never Y2K issues!! I’d be too expensive for them now!!
If a coal miner can, then I guess I can. How many coding jobs are there.
Except those working in govt related businesses.
I’m forced to use a PeopleNet device.
It’s a piece of junk, software-wise.
“Drivers using the effected ELDs n…” AFFECTED!! AFFECTED!!
Simple basic English and they can’t get that!
You may effect something, but something affects you.
Jeezzzz!
Shut up lol
Not impressed with my Pnet device. Took 4 installations to get one that worked. Has numerous but minor brain farts.
Their AOBRD system worked great.
Who are the genius engineers that work for this company? How did they even graduate high school never mind university? They didn’t think 2020 would be an actual year at some point? And these engineers make $60,000? For what?
Smfh I’ll never use a eld I’ll stick driving a glider with a great 60 series, once they finally make it final that gliders use eld I’ll be retired which isn’t far away so therefore I still win
Between the Government, employers, brokers, shoppers and receivers all screwing you over, by the time all is said and done you don’t make any more than a factory job.
So glad I was forced out of the business by a local political donor that owns the town.
Hmm.but ya still follow the industry? Ok
He’s not allowed to?
The software companies can not even get an ELD to work correctly and there pushing for autonomous trucks!! God save us all….
People net is a POS
I spend on average 30 minutes just to login due to system problems. Often times when I certify logs it does not take in the system. These problems cost me time not to mention fines by DOT if it shows in an inspection. Seems to me there is a liability issue here.
God peoplenet is a horrible system. They’ve had problems the last 4 years I’ve had it, but when elds came, its been just one issue after another
This along with the omnitracs issues of November last year presents a growing body of evidence that the ELD are not as reliable as advertised. Plus there is no evidence they made the roads any safer.
They’ve only added more stress to an already stressful jobs and cost trucker money out of their pockets.
Just this past weekend mine slipped out of personal conveyance mode for unknown reasons on a reset and logged 25 seconds of driving time before I caught it. It blew my reset and will cost me two days of income.
