New FMCSA Study Aims to Address Ongoing Truck Parking Shortage
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has officially launched a new study focused on the growing truck parking shortage in the U.S. The initiative, titled “Quantifying the Benefits of Creating New Truck Parking Spaces,” aims to better understand the challenges drivers face and identify practical solutions.
This study was first announced in November through a Federal Register notice. Now, the process has moved forward with a formal request for public comments and data collection. Drivers and industry stakeholders have until May 6 to submit their feedback.
Study Will Focus on Real Driver Experiences
FMCSA plans to gather around 1,000 survey responses from truck drivers. These responses will help estimate the financial and operational benefits of adding more truck parking spaces.
The study will focus on several key questions, including:
- How many trucks park in authorized versus unauthorized areas daily
- What methods are most cost-effective for increasing parking capacity
- Which parking information systems are most widely used and effective
- How often drivers pay for parking, make reservations, or use related services
By collecting this data, FMCSA hopes to gain a clearer picture of current parking conditions. In addition, the agency aims to support future policy and infrastructure decisions.
Industry Feedback Shows Mixed Concerns
Earlier feedback from the November notice revealed strong industry interest. Out of eight total comments, seven supported the study. These included responses from major organizations like the American Trucking Associations (ATA) and the Truckload Carriers Association.
However, one anonymous driver expressed concern about government involvement. Instead, they suggested that private truck stop companies should handle the parking shortage.
Meanwhile, other commenters highlighted a growing issue: the rise of paid truck parking. Many drivers feel frustrated when their only options are either paid spaces or unauthorized parking areas.
Study Scope Will Remain Limited
Although truck parking involves many factors, FMCSA clarified that this study will focus strictly on capacity and usage. Therefore, it will not evaluate the pros and cons of paid versus free parking.
In addition, the study will not cover amenities such as restrooms, food options, or vending machines. While these features are important to drivers, FMCSA stated that analyzing them falls outside the scope of this research.
Data Will Help Shape Future Solutions
The results of this study are expected to play a key role in shaping future truck parking strategies. As parking shortages continue to affect driver safety and efficiency, better data could lead to more informed decisions.
Furthermore, understanding driver behavior and preferences may help identify the most effective ways to expand parking capacity. This includes both public and private solutions.
As the trucking industry continues to grow, addressing parking shortages remains a critical issue. Therefore, FMCSA is encouraging drivers to participate and share their experiences to help guide future improvements.
