The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has reinstated the Field Warrior ELD to its official list of registered electronic logging devices after removing it in December. As of February 25, 2026, carriers can once again use the device for hours-of-service compliance.
Here are the reinstated device details:
-
ELD Name: Forward Thinking Systems — Field Warrior ELD (BYOD)
-
Model Number: FW-BYOD
-
ELD Identifier: FTSFW1
-
Provider: Forward Thinking Systems LLC
Previously, FMCSA removed this unit along with three other devices. However, after Forward Thinking Systems corrected the identified issues, FMCSA returned the Field Warrior ELD to the approved list.
What This Means for Carriers
Because federal rules require most interstate carriers to use registered ELDs, compliance depends on regularly checking FMCSA’s official list. When FMCSA revokes a device, carriers must act quickly.
Specifically, carriers using a revoked ELD must:
-
Stop using the device immediately for compliance
-
Switch to paper logs or a compliant backup method
-
Install a registered replacement device within 60 days
Now that FMCSA has reinstated the Field Warrior ELD, carriers using this model may continue operating without switching systems, provided the device remains on the registered list.
Why FMCSA Revokes ELDs
Manufacturers add devices to the FMCSA registry through a self-certification process. In other words, they certify that their equipment meets federal technical standards. However, FMCSA reviews devices for compliance and removes any that fail to meet required specifications.
Typically, FMCSA revokes devices when they:
-
Fail to meet federal technical requirements
-
Do not properly record hours-of-service data
-
Lose provider support or availability
In recent years, FMCSA has increased oversight to protect the integrity of the ELD mandate and ensure consistent enforcement.
Stronger Oversight Moving Forward
At the same time, FMCSA has updated its vetting process for electronic logging devices. Instead of relying solely on self-certification, the agency plans to strengthen its review procedures before listing devices as compliant.
This change addresses concerns about “chameleon” ELDs, where some providers rebrand devices after revocation and attempt to reenter the market. By tightening upfront reviews, FMCSA aims to prevent noncompliant devices from appearing on the list in the first place.
What Carriers Should Do
Carriers should regularly verify their ELD status on FMCSA’s registered device list. Although FMCSA has reinstated the Field Warrior ELD, compliance status can change. Staying proactive helps carriers avoid violations, fines, and potential out-of-service orders.
