It seems that heroes never seem fully comfortable with the title. In their mind, they were just doing their duty – which of course makes them even more heroic. And so it is with driver Robert Sutton who claims that he’s “a firm believer that it’s our duty as professional truck drivers to help and assist the motoring public if they have an emergency,” which is exactly what he did when he helped save a family of four after a horrible accident.
He was headed east on I-84 in Oregon at around 4 in the morning when a pickup truck hauling a rented trailer passed him on the icy roads. The driver of the pickup lost control, sending the vehicle spinning on the ice before rolling over several times and landing on its roof.
Acting quickly, Sutton avoided the accident, stopped his vehicle 800 up the road on the shoulder, grabbed his jacket and flashlight, and ran out to help.
On his way to the vehicle, Sutton almost tripped over something in the snow that turned out to be a someone. One of the children had been thrown out the window during the accident. He wrapped her up in his coat before digging out the rest of her family and helping them escape from the passenger side window. He then kept the family safe and warm inside his truck while waiting for the authorities to arrive.
Sutton has been a professional driver for over 34 years and has been honored as a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carrier’s Association.

Great job Robert! I’m proud to be among your numbers. You are what most of our profession is all about. Keep up the good work.
Absolutely bravo!!!
Meanwhile, the stories involving the truck crashes are the ones that make the national headlines. The public is convinced by the media that all we do is crash and kill people. How about more stories like this making the spotlight?
It’s no different than your nightly news cast. It’s all murder and robbery and other crimes. The media makes the people think it’s a dangerous, unforgiving world out there. How about showing the good that people do?
We, as a whole, are molded to believe what they want us to believe so that they can pass the regulations that put more money into their pockets, or otherwise benefit their own agendas.
You wont see stories like these on the fmcsa page. Good job driver!
