Truckers who’ve “gotta go” may want to make a pit stop before hitting Maryland. The state’s rest areas have fallen under the budgetary axe, with some facilities shut down and others’ hours of operation cut back.
The state’s Highway Administration has permanently closed restrooms at the Cove Overlook facilities on U.S. Hwy. 219, and will seasonally close the Sideling Hill rest area on I-68 from January through April.
Facilities that are open with limited hours include: the Youghiogheny Overlook on Hwy. 68, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the Bay Country on Hwy. 301, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the Crain Memorial Welcome Center on Hwy. 301, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and the North Welcome Center on Hwy. 13, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Both northbound and southbound I-95 welcome centers will stay open around the clock, though I-70 eastbound and westbound facilities have been shut down for renovations. The I-70 centers are expected to open again next autumn.
