The Department of Transportation has issued a warning to independent truckers and carriers to be aware of a scam that is targeting sensitive financial information. Carriers are reporting getting letters that appear to be from Equifax Credit Information Services – Government Division that are requesting bank account information.
The letter claims that carriers are registered “as a prospective contractor for procurements issued by the U.S. Federal Government” and in order to become a contractor, the carrier will need to provide Equifax with their banking information so that they can find out the carrier’s “procurement credit score.”
The scammers request that in order to be “eligible for procurement with the U.S. Federal Government,” the information has to be faxed to them as soon as possible.
The letter is signed by Thad Brown, Senior Credit Analyst.
