In a bid to convince New Yorkers that the planned renovation of a Long Island truck stop into a Long Island “No-Truck Stop” is a good idea, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recounted the horror story of when he was stranded there for a few hours, calling the place “a nightmare from hell.”
It was before he became governor of New York in 2011 that Andrew Cuomo and his brother found themselves at the rest area. They had just purchased a classic car and were driving it from New York City to the Hamptons when the car broke down. After calling for a tow truck they waited at the rest stop at Dix Hills on a Friday night.
“It was like being in some movie of Land of The Lost, where you saw things that you were not supposed to see in life,” Cuomo said. “I mean, you would have liked to have lived your whole life and not had seen these things or experienced them, because then you can’t get them out of your mind once you’ve seen them. I mean it was terrible.”
Cuomo went on to say that he saw truckers “being very creative” about “functions that they needed to fulfill” adding that he saw drug sales and prostitution there.
The new state-of-the-art rest area will have video monitoring, on-site law enforcement, food, 24-hour restrooms, and lighted parking, but trucks will be prohibited from parking there or even parking on nearby roads. Instead they will have to use a nearby DOT maintenance facility. The facility has only portable toilets available.
Gov. Cuomo’s new $20.2 million Welcome Center is scheduled to be completed in October.

I knew a driver that used to have four girls in his truck. He would drop them at a truck stop and pick them up on his way back, collect the money they earned to pay for his fuel.
People like him don’t often come into contact with real people, or real life, and they find it an unpleasant experience when they do. He probably felt pretty exposed, surrounded as he was by the unwashed masses, and unable to escape.
sounds like a lot of political hot air..coming from the arena he is from i know for sure the so called horrors he’s seen are thousand times practiced worse and more gruesome in his circles but they pretty it up with lace and luster to make it sociably acceptable. yer talking bout a city thats sent rivers of rats across the nation..they were born there..raised there..created by the enviroment you harvested. You blame the results instead of the cause. im not endorsing any of the things that he was disgusted by..as id have been equally but all he is doing is shifting the problem..not solving it..hes moving it out of sight and mind..while it continues to fester..This is our problem..We hide our messes we are responsible for by sweeping it under the carpet..but we been doing it so many years theres no more room..Its spilling over into the quaint communities that think the world works by their command whim and wish and the things that make it work are somehow magically below them. The hand that should slap them for their the disgraceful conditions theyve allowed to evolve while they pigged out and lived it up freeloading off our hard work. I see the lines of a permanent smirk on their faces because theyve come to believe their entitled to be irresponsible and have a gourmet life in return. I wonder how much NY state received in federal funds to study truck parking. Probably about $20 million. I never knew drugs and prostitution only took place where trucks parked. What a joke. $20 million for bathrooms and cameras and the trucks get sent down the road to a parking lot with a portable toilet. Cuomo is getting even for having to refund all the HUT fees.

I can’t say I blame them for wanting to keep the riff raff out but what they are doing is keeping the common sense driver out too. Lazy drivers that need to use the facilities will use a brown bag or a bottle to relieve themselves rather then wait to use a restroom . Sex, well thats another issue. If I ever get another chance to go to that area I will not stop in that rest area for sure.
Wow, After 30 years in the industry I never knew drivers ran prostitution and drug rings out of truck stops! I always went to sleep after a long shift. Must have missed it. I guess having a 24 hour police presence wouldn’t be able to stop the truckers from this kind of activity. God knows the truckers are responsible for all the drugs, garbage, prostitution and crime in America! We should all be ashamed of ourselves and stop hauling freight and reform our lives 😀

Well it is a very rough place and you don’t wanna spend the night there. But down the road to Philly to a little spot just into Del. was a place like NO other. Women walked around with NOTHING on between trucks doing tricks, selling drugs and making most of us stuck there on a Friday night SICK. Truck drivers made it profitable for the Philly mofia. I agree with JL. The gov claims he saw crime being committed, PROVE IT. I’ve parked there plenty of times and the only thing I was worried about was waking up and beating rush hour traffic. Secondly, I say take Cuomo out of his office and put him in a DOT maintenance yard with a laptop and portapotty and see how he likes it. He spends more on his state prisoners than he does truck drivers. SMH

Trust me when I say this. The suits have as much if not more of a problem with drugs, gambling, and prostitution. I know someone who works in a drug rehab where the rich quietly go to cool off. They come from the highest circles of Wall Street and politics.

This why I’ll never deliver in the northeast. They hate drivers and don’t want us there. Only to drop the goods off and get out immediately. Well let them build canals and rails through their states to get their crap.
Most of us get paid extra to go to the city. The extra fees are rolled down to the consumer. I’m not sure if the extra money is still worth going.
First, if the dishonorable Governor really witnessed the terrible things he says he witnessed, why didn’t he and his equally moronic brother call the state police? I never said he participated in any of it. Let’s just get that on the table right now. I never said he bought or sold ANYTHING .
Second, a general truck strike is needed for the NYC and Albany areas. Let both areas get a good taste of what a “no trucks” policy is all about. No loads in, and no loads out. Start with the garbage. Let the streets be filled with garbage for two weeks or so, then we’ll see which side of a no-trucks truck stop the Cuomo Clown Show is on.

Easy fix, just make all commercial vehicles over 25,000 lbs gvw illegal inside new York city and all buroughs . Force every business to set up warehouses out side city limits, and make them pick up all their own freight. Keeps drivers from having to deal with all the city traffic and problems. Causes all businesses to pay more to get their freight, and puts a lot more small box trucks on the road. Also create more local jobs.
Wonder why The Penn Pike has all new travel centers for trucks also .All nice and clean and Pa takes in millions in tolls from trucks.So does NY.This dude is a total dush
I’m sorry but here we go again. This isn’t an issue of truckers vs. 4wheelers. Its an issue of high crime areas vs. Low crime areas. How many places in New york have these problems? However, because this man actually had to visit an area where poor and middle class visit. He saw a side of New york he regularly does not see. Put security at rest stops for everyone. Truckers and 4wheelers!
The scary part is that this attitude is across the country and causing an us vs. Them attitude. I really am wondering what the end game is for outlawing parking for trucks everywhere is? In oregon they have been outlawing parking in many cities.For cars as well. However, many 4wheelers are ignorant to this. I’m surprised because there is a huge problem with parking for homeowners as well here in pdx.

As most of the unfamiliar public perspectives or in this case, an elitists perspective, rather than acknowledge that the reason civilization like NYC can exist is due to the high volume movement of goods, the most estate politically popular move is to treat all truckers like the scourge of society.
No freight in or out for several days would be the way to go but like it has been said before it wouldn’t work because you’ll never get every trucker or company to participate.

There are some lazy a&$ truckers that are ignorant and do gross stuff but most of us are family men just trying to earn a living and do not condone that type of ignorant behavior! If i saw someone throwing a jug or a bag of excrement out their window id rub their face in it like the dog they are! I just think he is full of crap, i dont buy his “nightmarish” ordeal.
