President Obama said Friday he will nominate David L. Strickland to head the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Strickland, who was lead Senate staffer for creating the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standards, currently serves as lead oversight staff person for the Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, as well as for the NHTSA. After the nomination is sent to the Senate, Strickland must receive confirmation from the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, which is the committee he serves.
The nominee is an alumnus of Harvard University, and the senate’s senior counsel for the Consumer Product Safety Commission. In 2004, MADD named Strickland as their Congressional Staffer of the Year. His past work has included advising committee members on vehicle safety mandates and reforms. He has also advised on grant funding increases for drunk driving and seatbelt grant programs.
The administrator’s post has been unfilled for the duration of the current presidency. A prior nominee, Chuck Hurley of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), withdrew from consideration of the job in May.
