Seeking to reinstate a money-making program from the 1980’s and 1990’s, New York State is implementing an out-of-state licensing fee for all commercial motor vehicles operating on any state roads. In response, OOIDA has filed a lawsuit to prevent New York from levying this extra tax against truckers.
The costs associated with registering are a $15 registration fee and a $4 decal. While this may not seem like much, back in the 80’s, many states had a similar system in place. If that were to happen again, truckers could end up spending over $900 on individual state registration fees, not to mention all the paperwork to be dealt with.
In the 90’s, the ATA and OOIDA worked together to get these out-of-state registration fees repealed, but due to severe budget problems, many states are getting creative with ways to find more money.
OOIDA is claiming that the fees are “unconstitutional and discriminatory” against out-of-state truckers and is filing for class action status on the lawsuit.

That’s an easy fix, truckers just have to refuse to deliver to anyone in New York. My husband won’t deliver there anyway. I heard a few truck drivers say it is not safe to drive through certain parts of NY, so why pay extra to put your life at risk. I also heard it was very trucker unfriendly. With all expenses occurred as an owner operator, fuel, permits, insurance, food, now some truck stops want to charge a fee for overnight parking, they are making it harder to find places to park your truck some 35-40 a night, you can pay up to if not more, 700.00 just to fuel up. Next the drivers will be working for no pay.
Everything old is new again..
Simple solution, just stop taking freight to new york!!
I guess half my store deliverieswont get done and can’t see my family
What they should do is build a warehouse just outside the state line and drop off all of the freight there and if the citizens of New York want the freight, they will find a way to come get it. Let them do without for a few weeks and see what happens.
19 bucks. It probably evens out after considering trucks that avoid the tollway and certain toll bridges. Maybe the money will go to fixing damaged bridges.
It’s nice to know there is a voice for the truckers.
hang on… don’t we already have to buy that stupid little sticker that goes on the front of our trucks ?
I pay that much for every trip (out and back) through New Mexico in addition to NM. permits and IFTA. SEE Oregon, or TN., or Ky…… New York HUT is cheap.
