A new report from CargoNet, a cargo theft prevention and recovery network, claims that in the last three months alone, over $18 million of cargo has been lost.
Covering early October through the end of the year, the report states that there were 181 reported incidents of cargo theft. Interestingly, a whopping 55% of them occurred on Friday or Saturday.
As usual, the most stolen type of goods were food and beverages, accounting for 24% of all cargo lost. But even though shipments of electronics only accounted for 13.8% of cargo thefts, they made up 57.9% of the lost value. That’s approximately $417,250 lost per load.
The majority of the thefts occurred in or around cities with New York, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Miami seeing the most action. Despite this trend however, less metropolitan areas aren’t entirely safe either.
“Crime groups based in states as far away as Florida aggressively targeted freight in Pennsylvania. More than $1.5 million in cargo was stolen in Pennsylvania in those three month,” CargoNet said according to Transport Topics Online. “In some cases, the cargo is sold before it was ever reported.”
