Drivers in the Northeast may have noticed an increase in traffic around Washington D.C. and New York the past few days, and with good reason: The Pope is in town.
Pope Francis arrived in Washington D.C. and has been causing traffic headaches since Tuesday as people from all over the country flooded into the city for a chance to see him. He arrived in New York today and will be joined by President Obama and the UN General Council on Friday. Manhattan traffic is expected to come to a standstill – and it’s so bad that a Helicopter service is offering special flights from one side of Manhattan to the other for $95 a seat.
The Pope will remain in NYC until Saturday when he will head to Philadelphia where he will hold a mass that’s expected to draw 1.5 million people.
Traffic has been so bad that UPS has suspended service completely to 28 zip codes and FedEx has warned customers to expect delays in 1,200 zip codes.
It’s not only the increase in cars on the road that has been causing the traffic; road closures have been causing major issues. ABC news has provided a great breakdown of what roads will be closed when, but it seems like a good idea to just avoid the region entirely if you can.
In an interview with Transport Topics, the executive director of the New Jersey Motor Truck Association was quoted as saying “[Truckers] should go a different way… I would not be on a truck on I-95 anywhere near Philly, even 100 miles away.”

I would certainly like to see a source for where you all think the traffic was bad in DC. I was in downtown DC and the traffic wasn’t bad at all. Nor was it bad on the belt ways. Just curious who thought that? I was also in Manhattan last night. Besides a couple of hiccups traffic flowed just fine.
As always, the source(s) is located at the bottom of the post, on the line that says “Source:”
The Pope is simply a man,…..who’s,…in one way or another proven his love for God and obviously – his son,…Jesus Christ.
He can offer the same but no more hope to people than an ordinary priest of high believer.
One must read the Bible daily, think about God,…not the Pope…..the Pope even knows this. Read daily,….think about God and grow a relationship with the Holy Spirit…believe in God’s son who came down to die for us ALL,…that’s the only way to heaven. There is one God,…only one God…and no other God’s.
Preach much? Wow!
Since we’re affirming our faith and instructing others to as well. Let me gleefully declare that “I” don’t believe in Santa, the Easter bunny or your Jesus or any other glorious diety invented by man to control the sheep
That said… The papal visit to NYC was one heckuva crazy traffic day since it occurred simultaneously with UN week. The east side of Manhattan was totally a wreck
$95 for a helicopter ride isn’t bad at all. Sign me up.
I just spent the weekend with my mom in NY and made an overnight delivery to North Philly this morning. No real traffic at all.
Just gotta know your way around.
