Here’s a friendly (and timely) reminder: Your highway use taxes are due on August 31st!
The IRS has issued a reminder to truckers that their 2290 forms are due! You can read more about your 2290, the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return here.
For any vehicle first used before or during July of 2016 the filing deadline is August 31st. For any vehicle first used after July, the filing deadline is last day of the month following the month it was first used. So if you used your truck first on August 2nd, your filing deadline would be September 30th.
The IRS is encouraging all drivers to file their forms online which you can do here. If you want to and you’re reporting fewer than 25 vehicles, you can still file on paper.
This tax applies to all vehicles with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds, but only if you expect it to be used for 5,000 miles or more. You can also use the same form to request a tax credit if your truck has been destroyed, stolen or sold.

Here’s my friendly reminder:
The IRS Form 2290 is just another way for bureucrats to extract even more money from truckers, and amounts to nothing more than extortion.
Same with the IFTA program. The general public, for the most part, complain that the disastrous Obamacare forces the consumer to buy something they don’t want. The IFTA program forces the trucker to buy fuel in every state the truck is registered in, regardless of whether the truck ran in that state or not. Buy the fuel and pay the fuel taxes, or don’t buy the fuel and pay the fuel taxes anyway. What a monumental, mafia-style, rip off.
I thought this tax was ruled unconstitutional and therefore was no longer being collected? What changed?
I think that’s the one for New York State. This seems to be one that goes to owner operators and fleet owners. Still unjust.
I’ve been out of the business for 10 years…don’t miss all this tax paperwork one iota!! And I do NOT miss the scenarios thru the year when I had to go to the bosses with the paperwork and tell them “Oh, I need a cheque for this tax for $X” and “I need a cheque for that tax for $Y” and listen to them crab about how much this costs. HEY–I didn’t pass these laws–I’m just doin the paperwork SO YOU CAN STAY IN BUSINESS!
And I do not do not do NOT miss the NY HUT stuff every quarter–laden miles, unladen miles, GVW, empty wt., toll road miles, etc. We hardly ever went to NY, but kept the authority and the HUT stickers…one year NY made us an annual filer (HOORAY)-next year…back to quarterly–I filed an appeal, sent letters, filled out forms…but ya can’t fight City Hall (or Albany)…no annual filings for you…back to the headaches every quarter.
As much as a rip-off 2290 is, at least it was an itty bitty simple form all ya gotta do is put in the VIN# and pay the $. When I did it, I think it was $550 per power unit.
