A shark being transported to an aquarium in Coney Island, NY was killed after the truck it was being transported in crashed and it was ejected from its tank and died.
According to NBC New York, the sandbar shark that was ejected was killed, but three other sharks survived thanks to a rescue team that was dispatched from SeaWorld in Orlando, FL. The sharks were put in new tanks and then transported to SeaWorld until new arrangements for delivery can be made.
The accident occurred on I-95 in Florida after a tire on the truck blew and the driver lost control. The truck ended up in a ditch, but neither the driver nor the two other passengers in the vehicle were injured.
While they may look similar to their more fearsome cousins the bull sharks, sand sharks average only about 5 feet long and are generally considered not to be dangerous to people. As such, they are popular sharks for aquariums.
