The Truckload Carrier’s Association has announced that it’s 700 member companies have made a commitment to hire 50,000 veterans and military spouses over the next four years.
There are currently over 700,000 unemployed veterans and about another million veterans will be reentering the workforce in the next five years. According to TCA president Brad Bentley, the program, dubbed “Operation Heroes To Highways,” will help to combat both veteran unemployment and the driver shortage.
TCA is not alone in the project. They are partnering with FASTPORT and Hiring Our Heroes, a nationwide initiative to help veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses find meaningful employment opportunities.
“We are honored to partner with Hiring Our Heroes and FASTPORT to help our veterans find great new careers as drivers, mechanics and leaders in the truckload industry,” said Bentley. “Our member companies have immediate opportunities for veterans and transitioning service personnel in nearly every hometown across America.”

Thats great they want to do this for Vets, but the younger vets who have had multiple deployments will not want to be away from home for any length of time. Some may survive it, but most will not. We all know it is a tough industry with substandard pay for what we do and the hours we put in. Sadly to say, they will NEVER meet their 50k goal, let alone 700k in 5 years. This is just reality. There is a reason why the average age in this industry is 53 yrs old.
Your points sound very valid, Sheriff John, but it does sound like a very nice jesture by Truckload Carrier’s Association to at least try and help out some of our Vets. IMO, it’s extremely sad to see so many news stories about the large numbers of Vets that are homeless and/or becoming drug addicts. God bless our Veterans and their famalies!
I believe vet’s would make great truckers and employees. Don’t think a 2 or 3 week deployment, after doing a year away from home, in a war zone will be an issue.
