Boyd Miles and his cousin Christopher Crandall were stuck on the side of the road on I-15 in Utah when – despite taking all the necessary safety precautions – a car was on a direct collision course for Crandall. Sacrificing himself, Miles was able to push Crandall out of the way and save his life – but paid the price.
The team had pulled over to the side of the road in the pre-dawn hours due to their truck having lost its coolant. The drivers put out their cones and triangles, turned on their flashers, called their carrier, Prime, and waited for a mechanic. When the mechanic was unable to fix the problem, they called for a tow. Once the tow arrived, the driver requested that the team wait outside the cab, so they stood just next to the barrier on the shoulder of the road.
That’s when a driver coming from the opposite direction fell asleep at the wheel, crossed over to the wrong side of the road, and headed straight for the truckers. Crandall was directly in the path of the vehicle, so instead of diving to safety, Miles threw himself at Crandall to push his cousin out of the way. He was killed instantly.
Crandall survived, but woke up in the hospital with major injuries including multiple broken bones.
For his heroic actions, Miles was posthumously named a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carrier’s Association.

Great! The cousin is a hero! But he’s still dead! Still very
tragic! Very tragic! 🙁
No thought or hesitation in the most unselfish act one could ever do for another human. “Greater love has noone than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”
Should we all strive to be so giving, and even with the belief, would we be willing when the occasion arose?
No pun intended in any way, and while Miles’ heroism is truly commendable, I can’t say I’d do the same. Not with a wife, two kids, two wonderful step-children and two cats who love me to pieces and whose lives would be destroyed. I agree with Douglas. Get as far away from potential harm as possible. It could be the difference between one dead and one alive, or no dead and two alive. I’ll take that one any day of the week and twice on Shabbat.
How many of us can think fast enough to save a life in this manner? It’s sad to think that this sort of thing could ever happen, but it has become far too commonplace. I would recommend standing on the far side of the truck. At least you would have some protection. My sincere condolences to the families of good, honest working men.
RIP sir. people like you made me proud to be a truckdriver!
You clowns are funny, your not truckdrivers anymore, its road clowns
Wow, just wow. I’m guessing that a hero is still more than a sandwich in today’s world. Didn’t think it was. Miles, you are and were a hero. You and people like you are really missed.
That unselfish act is the truest form of love for another..Oh and let’s not forget a golden ticket to see the mansion GOD has prepared for Mr.Miles…RIP SIR…My Condolences to the Family
What happened to the driver of the car? If that had been a truck that killed this driver, we’d know everything including the size of the driver’s briefs by now. Why withhold the info about the driver of a car?
You know why, four-wheeler drivers are so innocent and wouldnt break any laws or harm anybody. It’s just us big mean, nasty, homicidal maniac serial killer truckdrivers who cause all the carnage on the highways. We get blamed for people who get in cars after they have been drinkijg and cause wrecks.
