After serving as interim FMCSA Administrator for almost exactly a year, Scott Darling has been nominated to serve as the next official Administrator.
The post has been vacant since former Administrator Anne Ferro left her post last year. Though her departure came shortly after a call for her to step down and an open letter to DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx demanding her resignation, there was no indication that Ferro was leaving for any other reason than to pursue her new job as president and CEO of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.
Darling is currently chief counsel for the FMCSA, but since Ferro’s resignation, DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx entrusted Darling with the day to day duties of the FMCSA Administrator.
“Through strong and effective management as chief counsel and acting administrator of FMCSA, Scott has already demonstrated his ability to lead the Agency,” said Foxx of Darling. “He is committed to making our roads safer for motorists, passengers, and professional truck and bus drivers, and is constantly working with all sides to find solutions to challenges facing the industry and the motoring public. As administrator, FMCSA will continue to benefit from his years of leadership and experience working in the transportation sector. I look forward to our continued work together.”
Cautious optimism has poured in from the trucking industry over the decision to nominate Darling. Both the ATA and OOIDA have praised him in the past with Jim Johnston of OOIDA saying that “we have found him to be open and receptive to input from the association, and he appears to appreciate the role of professional truckers.”

It is wrong that the individual directly responsible for regulations regarding my safety knows nothing about my job,or the safety issues that I face on a daily basis. Aggressive autos, lane restrictions, etc….my job will become no safer in the near future.
Hope it is isn’t more business as usual thing
“Though her departure came shortly after a call for her to step down…there was no indication that Ferro was leaving for any other reason…”
Except for the obvious one, that she did in fact leave.
Another politician. We need someone like Rick Gobble in charge. Someone with trucking knowledge and common sense!
What really needs to happen is to re-educate these dam 4 wheelers. Restructure their requirements on licenseing and have them checked by the D.O.T. to ensure our safety and the safety of others, then maybe the roads would be a safer place to drive. ( If you don’t like the way I’m driving stay off the sidewalk.)
No “4 Wheeler” is going to respect any trucks until you slow the hell down. I am so sick of the idiot 18 wheeler that thinks they are driving a race car or think that they can drive in the passing lane for 10 miles holding everyone else up. Maybe re-educating ALL drivers is the solution.
I agree I would like to see someone with actual on the road experience. I also like the idea of educating 4 wheelers. Now would be a good time to get them to respect the truck.
How many miles driving a big truck has this bureaucratic clown logged? 0 would be my guess.
