A Florida truck driver is being hailed as a hero after he noticed a fellow trucker collapse in the cab of his truck, pulled him from his vehicle, and helped administer CPR for 15 minutes until emergency responders could arrive.
Joseph Wiggins, a driver for Phillip Williams & Sons, was sitting in traffic heading north on I-95 in Florida when he noticed that the passenger in the truck next to him fell forward and collapsed. Wiggins then saw the driver of the vehicle shake the other man and start to panic.
Acting quickly, Wiggins exited his truck and approached the passenger side of the other vehicle where he found the man passed out on the floor between the seats. There was no heartbeat and he was not breathing, so with the help of the other driver, Wiggins pulled him from the vehicle onto the grassy median, and started to administer CPR. The other man called 911.
Another bystander, a nurse, stopped to help Wiggins and the two of them performed CPR on the unconscious man for nearly 15 minutes until emergency crews arrived.
It took the crews several attempts of shocking the man to regain a pulse, but once they did he was airlifted to a hospital and made a full recovery.
The Truckload Carrier’s Association has named Wiggins a Highway Angel and presented him with a certificate, patch, pin, and truck decal.
If you are interested in learning to perform CPR, you can find a certification course through the Red Cross. Joseph Wiggins was certified, and according to the doctors who treated the man, it is because Wiggins knew how to administer CPR that he was able to save a man’s life.
