An Oklahoma-based driver is finally getting the recognition he is due after a coworker found out that he had intervened after an accident to save someone’s life – twice! – but hadn’t told anyone.
Boe Burleson, who works in sales and pricing for the Oklahoma-based Paul Transportation, wrote a letter to Overdrive Magazine to let them know about a heroic trucker who drives for the company. According to Burleson, if more people lived their lives like Gary Hurd, our world would be “overwhelmed with good.”
Burleson first found out about Hurd’s heroics when Paul Transportation received a call from the family of a young girl who wanted to let the company know how much they appreciated the driver who had saved their daughter’s life. They wanted to talk to the driver to thank him personally, but no one at the company knew what the family was talking about.
After asking some questions, the company found out that Hurd had pulled the young girl from an accident, administered CPR, and saved her life. When they asked why Hurd hadn’t told them about it, he said that he hadn’t sought recognition because “That’s just what people are supposed to do.”
Then, just over a year later, Burleson was looking over Hurd’s paperwork and noticed a letter he had received. When he asked Hurd about it, the driver showed him the letter. It was a note he received from a man named Kerry Greenfield who Hurd had pulled from a burning vehicle, before getting back on the road right away.
Burleson sent a copy of the letter and an enclosed picture of Greenfield and his family to Overdrive which you can see here.
Gary Hurd saved two people in just over a year, but never asked for any praise or thanks. According to Burleson, Hurd believes that “people do the right things even when bad things are happening.” Certainly Gary Hurd does, and the world is better for it!

Well done Mr. Hurd, well done.
Awesome story. Gary is a extremely humble person. Great job Gary
Thank you Mr Hurd…great American Hero who deserves recognition. Saved 2 lives in one year in serious conditions. You got the truckers medal of honor in my book! Thank you Trucker!
I second that amotion.
He will probably get fired for some reason.
Probably not negative Nelly. How is it that people only look for the bad even when someone makes good choices? Even if true better to do good and face whatever than do nothing. Don’t recall who said this, “the only way for evil to prosper is for good men to stand by and do nothing.”
You tell them Kelly. I agree with you. There are just too many pessimist here.

No, they will be proud that one of their own is so selfless! Give him a bonus Troy!
Why ya gotta be negative?
I used to work there and would probably know him if I saw him! NICE WORK!
Real hero’s don’t need to broadcast.
