Truck owners will find out before May whether Unified Carrier Registration fees will be hiked next year. The federal Office of Management and Budget is reviewing a fee change that would increase truck owners’ costs by 122 percent for the registration.
Board members were updated on the status of the proposed change, which is expected to be published in the first four months of 2010. Until a new fee schedule is published, states won’t be able to collect UCR monies for 2010.
Both the Transportation Carriers Association and American Trucking Associations are against the change, citing the more-than-doubling of per-vehicle fees. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance is in favor of the increase, maintaining that carriers would still be paying less than under the old Single State Registration System.
The UCR board meets again in San Diego on Jan. 12.
