For Connor Hudziak, a Chicago-based gamer, a passion for trucking began not on the open road but in front of a computer screen. Unlike most kids who play action or fantasy games, Connor’s favorite was American Truck Simulator, a hyper-realistic game that lets players experience life as a truck driver—handling deliveries, running logistics, managing a virtual fleet, and even taking out virtual loans.
Though no one in his family worked in trucking, Connor became fully immersed in the game. He even built a dedicated gaming setup, complete with pedals, a steering wheel, shifter, and control box to mimic real truck controls. His go-to truck in the game? A Western Star 57X in candy-apple red.
Little did he know, that virtual experience would one day translate to the real world.
Western Star’s Big Surprise
Western Star Trucks, recognizing the value of the American Truck Simulator community, has partnered with game developer SCS Software to bring its Class 8 trucks into the game. The company also saw the game as a pipeline for discovering and inspiring future truck drivers.
Earlier this year, Western Star launched the “Star Nation Customer Experience” at its test center in Madras, Oregon. They held a sweepstakes for simulator fans, and Connor was one of two lucky winners invited to test drive real Western Star trucks and meet industry professionals.
Initially nervous, Connor soon bonded with trucking professionals and influencers, including YouTuber and trucking business owner Casey LaDelle. But the biggest shock came when Connor—who had never driven a real truck before—won a competitive backing challenge on the course, beating experienced drivers.
A Life-Changing Gift
Connor’s skills impressed LaDelle and the Western Star team so much that they decided to change his life. After the final dinner, Connor was surprised with an announcement: they had pooled together funds to pay for his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training.
Tears and applause followed. Connor was overwhelmed.
“It’s honestly been life-changing,” he said. “This was more than just a trip—it was a doorway into a future I’ve always dreamed about.”
What’s Next for Connor?
Since the event, Connor has been focused on earning his CDL. He hopes to start as a part-time or fill-in driver for the company he already works for and eventually transition into a full-time driving role. His story serves as an inspiring example of how gaming and real-world careers can collide—especially when industry leaders recognize and nurture emerging passion.
Western Star’s initiative proves that blending tech, mentorship, and opportunity can drive the next generation of truckers—right from a gaming chair to the open highway.
