Police are on the hunt for a man who is trying to appear to be one of their own. A North Carolina Sheriff is warning that a man has been posing as a N.C. Highway Patrol trooper and is pulling people over.
According to Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller, an unknown man has been pulling over motorists near Highway 17 in a dark Dodge Charger which is made to look like an unmarked police vehicle. It has a large antenna on top and flashing blue lights in the front grille. The driver is reportedly a tall white man in his late 20s or early 30s and has been seen wearing a black jacket and a cap with a N.C. Highway Patrol patch.
The man has been pulling people over since Monday and has so far targeted only female drivers.
The Sheriff’s department is asking anyone with information to call the Onslow County Sheriff’s office at (910) 455-3113.
“Anytime anyone impersonates a police officer or anything, we want to get them off the streets. The number one goal is safety for everyone involved,” said a First Sergeant with the Highway Patrol according to the local ABC affiliate, WCTI12.
WCTI12 also offered some safety tips from Sheriff Miller:
- In the event you are stopped by an unmarked car and it appears suspicious, you should call 911.
- If someone tries to stop you, continue driving until you are in a well-lit area such as a gas station or an open business.
- A true law-enforcement officer will not have a problem with someone calling 911 to confirm that they are legitimate

This is why unmarked cars should be illegal. The police use them to increase their revenue, but at the safety of the public. Any clown can get lights at a Wal-Mart and start pulling people over.
Right!
You are so right they was doing that in nj a few years ago
Get a grip on your self. This not a money maker. It is a safety tool. OK you can let go !
All I can do is laugh at your response.
I never pull over for any vehicle I don’t recognize.
If it is real, or important, don’t worry, they will soon be joined with a real police vehicle. Only then do I unload my AR15, and pull over. Anyone else is looking for trouble, and knocking on the right door.
Big TALK. IF YOU HAVE A BRAIN YOU DON’T SHOOT A AR 15 IN A POLICE ACTION. IF YOU REALLY HAVE AN CARRY AN AR 15, YOU SHOULD BE DIS ARMED.
ANTI GUN LAWS ARE MADE FOR PEOPLE, WITH A MENTALITY LIKE YOURS.
hAVE YOU PASSED PUBERTY YET?
Not a police action when it isn’t a real cop. Ask how the girls in New York, their opinion. They have been pulled over. Raped and had their vehicles stolen. Because they pulled over for a fake cop car
I imagine we will be reading a headline about you. It will go something like this; “Nut job gets shot to death by state troopers when he is seen driving down the road with a loaded AR-15. The nut job appeared to be delusional. The nut job kept ranting, “You’ll never take me alive you fake coppers!”. Condolences go out to his wife for having to put up with a deranged husband for so many years!
They only have unmarked vehicles to bust us motorists; because of their war on speeders. Unmarked vehicles should only be used in undercover work. I don’t agree with the police @ war with civilian anyway.
THE POLICE ONLY GO AFTER LAW BREAKERS, OR PEOPLE WHO ARE SUSPECTED OF BREAKING THE LAW.
iF YOU REALLY ARE A TRUCK DRIVER, WITH TIME AND MILES I AM SURE YOU HAVE HAD, BIG TRUCKS AND 4 WHEELER S DRIVING AT RECKLESS SPEEDS, OR MAYBE YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE DRIVERS.
It is undercover work its called highway interdiction. The point is to locate and stop drug and weapons trafficking. Most of the time large busts are made because of a simple traffic stop for a speeding violation or other “minor” infraction, an the use of unmarked cars makes that easier to blend in with other traffic. Also as a side note it cost more to pay for the officer and the car than they will ever make in fines. Most jurisdictions only receive a few cents off of ticket fines the rest of the money goes to the courts and victim compensation funds.
Yup, you so right
This is where I think Ohio should serve as a model for the rest of the country. They have no problems enforcing the laws with marked cars in Ohio. So the excuse that they need them to catch violators is invalid.
I agree with JC. I’ve noticed where a police car that is easily identifiable as such has a better effect on motorist obeying speed limit signs and keeping traffic under control than the ones that are unmarked. I have noticed with the unmarked car that the motoring public will be speeding, suddenly realize the car is a police car and start braking, sometimes too hard, and scaring up other motorist, causing them to brake. I say do away with unmarked.
Unmarked police cars are used to create revenue when used in traffic enforcement. They want you to speed so they can create revenue.
One thing to keep in mind is even fake police cars need regular maintenance.
Do the right thing and you will never have a problem. Marked or unmarked they are out there for the safety of all.
Well just down the road in Union County a few years ago a real police officer in a real marked police cruiser stopped and killed a young lady …. So marked or unmarked it can be dangerous…..
I believe in NC if you are being stopped by police on unlighted roads you are allowed to turn your 4 ways flashers on and continue on until you get to a well lighted area before you stop..
