Law enforcement officers will be out in full force this weekend as part of the Border-To-Border Traffic Safety Initiative all along the lengths of I-80 and I-35.
The multi-state enforcement blitz has the goal of zero highway deaths over the weekend. It’s a tall order considering it covers 4,400 miles of roadway from California to New Jersey and from Minnesota to Texas. Over just the month of August last year, 92 people were killed in crashes on I-80 and 73 people were killed on I-35.
Border-To-Border isn’t focused specifically on commercial vehicles, but law enforcement agencies are encouraging everyone on the road – pros or otherwise – to keep safe. Officers will be focusing on excessive speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving.
This year the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign will be happening at the same time as the Border-To-Border blitz, so with the two events coinciding, even if you don’t find yourself on I-80 or I-35, you’re likely to see increased police activity.

Why don’t we spend all the money on better driver education in mandatory classes and retesting current drivers?
Certainly there is a need for better driving skills and higher standards. Driving is a skill and if you cannot perform the act of driving at a high level, one doesn’t need to be behind the wheel of any vehicle.
Police ain’t the answer.
Wrong. Police is the answer.
Aggressive driving is a huge problem on the road. People know how to drive safely, they just don’t have time for it.
I ran 400mi of I80 yesterday and only saw 3 cops. People know it and will excercise their “right” to speed thru workzones and pass you in no passing zones.
People includes 4 and 18 wheelers.
Just listen to the CB and hear those drivers cursing out other drivers that only do the speed limit.
Nobody has time to be safe on the roads.
Looks like they’re in need of revenue…Again! At some point all the drivers are going to have to agree to shut the industry down for a couple of weeks, and prove once and for all that without trucks…America comes to a complete stand still. No gas, no food, no medicine, etc.
Yeah, lets act like the italian mob and put this whole country under distress because you are fed up with the police that keeps you honest.
This is this kind of public comment that makes us look like a bunch of idiots.
While some extra revenue is expected, it is not because they put more cops on the road, it is because they will catch more people being unsafe on the road.
Obey the traffic laws and you should zip thru this blitz without any issues.
Just a blitz?
Why can’t this be happening 7 days a week, 365 days a year? You hardly ever see a police car out on the road. And as the old saying goes, ‘Evil flourishes when good men do nothing’.
I see people speeding, and often at excessively high speeds almost every day. I am passed by motorists all the time, who have their cellphones in their hands, thumbing away at their screens and looking constantly up and down from them. And then, I see brake lights come on any time there is a cop sitting beside the road.
Where is I just cruise right on through. I have my cruise control set at the speed limit.
Want to stop the highway fatalities? Have a police presence all the time. People are killing other people because they think they are getting away with something. “There’s no cops around, so I’ll set my cruise on 90.”
If people knew there was a greater chance of getting caught and getting one of those hefty speeding fines, they would slow down and obey the law. So not just a blitz, all the time. And if you’re one of these groaning truckers, what would you need to worry about if you were obeying the law? Inspect your truck for problems everyday and just don’t speed. I never worry about seeing a cop. I know my stuff is right, and I don’t speed.
We need more cops on the road. All the time. Period.
Exactly. And if we are doing our job correctly, then we have nothing to worry about.
I agree 100% and support the idea of more police on the road.
