A few personal observations after reading through most of the threads:
After 22+ years in the USAF working in the Red-Headed Step-Child division of the aircraft maintenance field, (Aircraft Structural Maintenance - Sheet Metal - Scrap Metal; for those who know), and having to retire somewhat before I really wanted to, I feel confident that TMC will be a good fit for me, personally.
Strict adherence to co. rules/extended time away from home/long, weird working hours - <Duh>, ex-military, notta prob. (For most part)
Log Books/HOS - Tracking off-duty time will be a new one, but every minute of previous duty time had to be documented as to what you were doin/how were you doin it/where you were doin it at/how many peeps did it take to do it/and what technical order, regulation or directive were you doin it by.
Confined quarters - as confined as 6 dudes inna 3-dude tent? (Remember - Don't Ask/Don't Tell!)
Slow freight/No Freight/Hurry-up-n-wait - Shoot, gots me a PhD in hurryin up & waitin.
Time Mngmnt - Hmmm, lessee, 5-person dispatch team, 100 jets on the line, 65 takin off in the mornin, every one-of-em wantin some kinda work done to 'em....nope, nevah heard of the concept.
Pressure - called out to plane to evaluate a problem, inform PTB that it's a 3hr fix. Get informed in kind that POTUS will arrive in 2hrs, and is taking off in 2.5.Hey! Lookee there! Problem now fixed in 90mins, within specifications and completely airworthy (altho wasn't the prettiest repair in history).
Have a nice trip, sir!
Flatbeddin is hard/dirty work - Been crawlin in/under/over/around planes in coveralls, bout half the time wearin full-face respirator, through all manners of leaking liquids/greases/oils/paints & assrtd hazardous materials, in all manner of weather conditions, in temps rangin from -25F to 130F, in 0 - 60 knot winds - in spots up to and including under main landing gears replacing hydraulic brake lines; walking the backbones of Boeing 747's to fix cracked antenna brackets; to sitting on top of the T-tails of C-5 Galaxies replacing marker light assemblies; to carrying 150lb rolls of plastic to the topside of F-15E Strike Eagles to mask 'em off for painting - throughout career. Shoot, 13'6"/80-90lb tarps might be a drop down as far as those things go.
Passport/TWIC - Heard these were coming online through this board, so was lucky enough to still be getting regular checks from the AF to apply for and receive both these items with only a minimum of butt-ache.
Pre-Pass/EZ Pass/Tolls - will hafta play this one by ear while going through my training period and then figure it out from there.
So it would seem that TMC could be the place for me,![]()
But then again, what do I know, I'm just a.
(Sorry for the mini-autobiography - just felt a weird need to do some 'splainin, dunno why, who ever knows why.....if ya read this far, thanks, if not, oh well).
Clear the rear - stand-by for engine start - comin online on June 29!

Good luck. There are boatloads of prior military in TMC, and trucking in general.
Hurrycne Thanks this. -
Hurrycne you forgot one qualification you have that TMC requires. Keep that truck shiney and polished. No different than the military. Dress right dress! Oh wait, that's the army. I'm sure you air power guys are clean as well.
Hurrycne Thanks this. -
Most of what you described is trucking in general, not just TMC.
Hurrycne Thanks this. -
Hey Hurrycne,
Like your post, Navy P-3 Orion Flight Engineer, got my Phd in hurry up & wait and on time takeoff! -
Hurrycne, between your experiences and attitude, sounds like you would be able to do well in just about any profession. Good luck to you, sir.
TMC looks pretty good to me for getting a year or so under my belt. Only thing that worries me is the running in place. Have had asthma since I was a little kid. Kinda forced me to take it slow and steady. I only run from guns or fire -
Running in place? What's this, a new physical qualification?
-
Something about they have two nurses doing the DOT physicals, and you get a stress test of running in place for 2 minutes, alonf with a hernia check
I have my CDL and DOT card, but I imagine they would still have me do the whole thing anyway -
Hey EKZ.... is the stuf about $200.00 a week real or B/S . Im going TMC, but not if thats the true money prospects.
-
I've read that same thing about TMC & running. I've taken two physicals for TMC. Neither involved any running. Hernia checked both times. Yes, they require a physical administered by their doc.
HowUDoin Thanks this.
