so ok lets say i have the truck loaded and its loaded at 20000 lbs but the max capacity is around 30000 lbs, no air brakes, i could have a regular class c license and drive it? but if it was the same scenario with air brakes i'd need a class b?

No.....licensing restrictions go by gross vehicle weight rating, not the actual gross weight of the vehicle itself

Typically around 12-13,000 lbs unloaded, now gvwr Anything up to 26,001 lbs you only need a class c but anything over 26,001 lbs up to 33,000 or bobtailing you need a class b to drive it otherwise you'll get an over weight fine at the weigh station now if your hauling people, over 9 passengers you need your CDLs or hauling hazmat material youll need your class a CDL and hazmat endorsment if anyone trys to tell you otherwise they are full of S### and are ignorant when it comes to fmcsa/dot regs. I drive a 26ft long 13ft high international with air brakes marked 26000 max gvw air brakes have nothing ta do with licensing at all, of course if you have air brakes you'll need to know the ins and outs and how to test them of course but I'm always good to go at all weigh stations and inspections, not to sure about regs. On combinations cause I don't drive them also certain states differ slightly but as a cardinal rule go by the fmcsa/dot regulations they never change from state to state and apply to all states cause they are federal watchdog agencies usually if they want to site you for something they will do it however they want or however they can because there's so many regulations on the books that contradict themselves they can get you comming and going they should just lay off and let us safe drivers do our jobs in my opinion... not everyones a criminal for being overweight by 100 lbs or having 1 ever so slightly loose bracket on the bottom of your truck, bunch of brown shirt traffic Nazis I'm all about safety but holy crap do they do go way overboard in some states
