Hey Guys. I am fairly new to CB's. I have used them and played with them a little over a year now. I am gettin purty use to usein them. I know how to get one workin. But just recently bought an amp for my PC78LTW. I am not familiar with amps. And i switched it to SSB and it has a switch that says pre amp. I am not sure what that means. Thanks for the input.

The PRE AMP boosts your receiver now in most amps all this does is rase the "S" meter reading HOWEVER under very weak signal conditions this could be a PLUS .......

I use preamps on several bands to give me a edge on hearing very weak stations.

This is mine ... on top of the TS-2000 and the 2 meter one is on ther very right mounted to the desk support.

Also, unless you have an SSB radio, your going to want to turn that SSB switch off, that is a delay for talking sideband.

Well i Have an SSB Radio. The switch says AM on the bottom and on the top says SSB. My radio is SSB so thats y its on SSB. But the other switch which says Preamp has an on and off. I was just wonderin what the preamp meant. I didnt want to blow my radio out cause i just put a 1969 Final in it. With a high and low switch. If you could please be a tad more clearer. I didnt really understand what ya meant. Thanks for th input

The pre-amp improves your recieve. I.E. If your talking to a weak station, and you turn on the preamp, it will improve the incoming signal. The only drawback is alot of them bring in more static and ground noise with them. The AM/SSB switch should be on AM, unless you are talking on upper or lower sideband. The Hi/Lo switch is most likely the amp's power output. I didn't think the PC78LTW was a SSB radio, just regular AM cb.
At least thats how I think it all works, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Because I'm sure someone will be along to tell you, amplifiers are illegal to use on the 11 meter band. Just FYI.

#1.The SSB switch is to be only used if you are (USB) upper side band or (LSB) low side band. You wont hurt your radio buy using it on on AM but you will wear out relay inside the amp sooner or later if you use it all the time by mistake.

#2. The preamp switch is to be used if you are way out in the middle of no where trying to talk to someone that you can just hear. With the amp on you hit the preamp switch and you will hear that they come in a little stronger. The reason i say "out in the middle of no where" is because if you use the preamp in a area with alot of people talking on that channel you can blow the preamp circuitry out of the amp because of overload from radios that are within a few miles of you. Remember to leave the preamp switch off if you anywhere near anyone else talking.

#3. If you are talking on a PC78LTW then your radio DOES NOT have upper and lower side band. You may have had upper and lower channels installed in the radio but that is not the same thing at all. The only radio that Uniden has made is the last 5 years or so that has SSB is the Grant but i dont think they build them anymore.

I know pre amps are legal, when the OP mentioned the SSB and HI/LO switch, I assumed we were talking about a linear.
