Heavy haul king

I’ll tell you who the King of Middle TN is, his name is Shorty Crawford.
He didn’t get out much, but he moved some big loads back in the day with McCord Heavy and Specialized Haulers out of Nashville. He can tell you the height from memory on just about every bridge in Middle TN.

 

And 8 years ago you could just about make that much up in Fort Mac.

 

That has to be a miserable existence. Below 0 probably 6-8 months a year? I bet depression and alcoholism run rampant up there. Either that or 9 kids, because there isnt anything to do except work.... lol

 

Nah its not that bad. Its what you make of it. Winter's are cold but summers are hot. Plus in summer its daylight until about 10 pm.

 

It was different.

There weren’t many places for things like showers or even hot food, so we carried groceries and ways to cook in the truck. You know how you always see these guys crying about the food in the truck stops and the parking situations and whatnot? There was no crying about anything. Had to book a motel room to get a shower. And motel rooms were almost all booked out every weekend. The locals would book motel rooms on the weekends so their kids would be able to go swimming.

There were lots of guys who after a week or two would want to go home. Thing is, there was a line to get back on those jobs up there. It was definitely as rugged a people up there as anywhere else on earth. And yes, the money was simply obscene. And with rugged people, there’s less depression and alcoholism.

“What did you all do for recreation, Six?”

Get out of the truck, check into a motel, get a shower, find some hot food, enjoy that food, find some live music venue, trade DVDs, use the motel’s WiFi, go hang out with the friends you made on the job. It’s like any other place and any other job...you get used to it.

I wish I had known about Amazon back then. I had no idea they would become what they have.

 

If you ever get involved in some of these big construction projects in the States, it’s the same way. Some of those old wind jobs required us to be out in the middle of nowhere for 9 months at a time. Find a restaurant and a motel, become friends with the staff, and make the most of your situation.

 

Sounds a lot like Fallujah, minus the obscene money...

 

I heard he was an old guy from the boot, with long dreads, and gold teeth.

 

Did anyone else watch the video? (It's very cool, BTW) The narrator says the truck and trailer weigh 100 tons and the dozer weighs 86 tons. Later, he says the entire rig weights something like 136 tons.

I'm thinking the truck and trailer scale about 100,000 lbs, not 100 tons.
